HUNTER

The door clicked shut in my face.

I stood there for a second, staring at the wood while I thought of the mess I’d made of this. The bond was still steady, but Kitty was detached.

She hadn’t said a word before closing it. No argument or explanations, she didn’t even throw what I’d done to her in my face. Just the soft click and silence. I exhaled slowly and turned away, forcing my beast to back down. He didn’t like being shut out, especially after Kitty had tasted blood.

Mine. Claim. Protect.

The instincts clawed at my ribs, but I shoved them down and focused on our immediate problem. Justin.

By the time I reached the safehouse on the edge of the industrial district, buried beneath an abandoned shipping warehouse, Tanner was already waiting at the maximum security door. There were no pack scents on the outside, no magic markers. Just steel and concrete.

I followed him in and waited for him to secure the door again before walking down the dim corridors to the secure facilities two levels down. Every person I’d placed down here was a threat to the fragile peace I’d forged between the three kingdoms.

There was no digital access, no one besides Tanner and me with the clearance high enough to know about this place. Warded walls, so no one could get tracked, and no spells worked down here, either. No one got in without my approval.

Now that skinny kid lay on a cot in one of the rooms. Tanner opened the door, and I stepped in. It smelled of dried blood, piss, and decay. Justin’s chest rose and fell in shallow breaths. His neck was crushed, his shoulder shredded, and claw marks carved deep into his torso.

He looked like a beautiful work of art.

The edges of his wound smelled like the mark Zachary had carved into my chest when he infected me.

“He’ll live,” Tanner said. “Barely.”

The kid wouldn’t see the light of day again. But I didn’t say that, just nodded.

“Good.”

Tanner raised an eyebrow but didn’t comment. Maybe he’d heard the satisfaction in my tone.

“Get a few more healing potions in him before the medic works on him. We’ll interrogate as soon as he wakes,” I said, turning to walk out. “But keep him sedated.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

My mind was already running through the possibilities. I should have gone after the kid in the sedan, but I’d been locked in Kitty’s bloodlust. But that meant word would spread, and the people I was after would come out of the woodwork. Bronson was probably already asking questions.

“His brother will talk,” Tanner said, as if he’d read my mind.

“He’ll run first,” I replied. And there was nowhere in the three kingdoms that he could go that I couldn’t track him.

But I needed to know who else was involved in this shit so I could protect Kitty better. If Bronson was the one behind all this, I’d let him dig for information.

“Keep eyes on Bronson,” I said. “No confrontations. I want to know who he meets and where he goes. Everything he looks

at.”

“Already watching him, Your Majesty.”

“Good.”

I glanced back at the door we’d walked out of. Justin was the bait

The bond shifted faintly then, drawing my attention back to the apartment. The fragmented pictures filled my head. Bed. A cup of coffee on the side table. And then nothing but calm. No restlessness or tension. Kitty was going to sleep.

“Her Majesty is different,” Tanner said as he walked in step with me.

Tanner had been waiting for my signal before he approached the parking lot. He’d seen everything.

“She’s fine,” I lied. “Set out rotations. Two guards, everything manual.”

Bronson would be searching by the morning.

I stepped outside once everything was in place. Dawn was already breaking, but my beast still paced, still irritated and restless. When I got back into my untraceable car, I headed back to the city. Somewhere beyond that skyline, Kitty was sleeping peacefully after almost killing a wolf and a human. There was no guilt or regret in the bond.

She was just like the beast within me, and I wasn’t sure yet if that was a good thing or something else I had to manage. As soon as I walked back into my hotel room, I saw the light on the work phone I’d left on the side table blinking. It buzzed once, and I picked it up, expecting Tanner. It wasn’t. It was an unknown number.

When I answered, there was silence on the other side. Then a voice I recognised instantly.

“Your Majesty.”

Bronson.

My grip tightened on the phone. He hadn’t wasted time. At least he’d confirmed what I’d suspected.

“It’s too early. What do you want?”

“There was an incident last night,” Bronson said. There was no cockiness in his voice; perhaps our last meeting was still going through his head. “I believe the source of the power spikes has been found?”

“The Bureau is locked down, Bronson. And you’re not in charge of that investigation. You don’t have the clearance to know any details.”

“But sir-”

“Is there anything else?”

“The spike reached levels we haven’t seen before.”

And how would he know that if he wasn’t still poking his nose into my systems or using his moles? I’d gone through this shit with Elijah, cleansing the Bureau of his people, trying to rebuild system I could trust again. Why the hell was this happening again?

“The Council is convening this morning,” Bronson said.

He said it like he thought that would scare me.

“Then let them convene. Goodbye, Bronson.”

“Alpha Sterling,” Bronson said sharply, leaving my title out for once, reducing me to a mere alpha. “You’re moving pieces on the board that aren’t authorised.”

Ah. There it was. His tacit admission.

“Careful,” he added softly. “People disappear when you do that.”

I didn’t respond. I hung up and put the phone back on the side. Bronson would have tried to track my movements first before calling, and that thing hadn’t moved from the hotel room all night. He had no idea where I’d moved his ‘piece.

I headed to the shower first, washing the night’s sweat off my body before I dropped into bed. I’d take advantage of Kitty’s calm to recharge.

The bond flared suddenly.

I bolted upright for the second time that night, looking within me to understand what was happening. It wasn’t fear of anger. It was awareness.

Kitty was awake, and she wasn’t alone.
