I sat at the head of the table with a large stack of paperwork in front of me. Everything had been rewritten, leaving no loopholes, no room for interpretation.
White wolves would not be classified as unstable.
White wolves would not require registration.
White wolves would not be detained without cause.
Effective immediately.
By order of the Lycan King, His Majesty Hunter Sterling.
Each sentence read like a declaration of war, and my beast approved. He sat still just beneath the surface, just watching, focused on the people sitting at the table with me. Bronson had dragged them to the Bureau for his emergency report, only to be met by the paperwork passed through Legal just half an hour before.
I didn’t need to go through the Council to do what I wanted. My declaration was direct and loud, drowning out the single page Bronson had wasted his time printing out for everyone.
“This is… This is highly irregular, Your Majesty,” Bronson stammered while flipping through the new laws. “You can’t just change a whole system to suit yourself.”
“Can’t I?” I asked. “What should I do instead? Wait here while you finish your witch hunt and attempt your feeble rebellion?”
“You can’t accuse me of a rebellion without proof,” Bronson said “Whatever you think of me, your blatant abuse of power is clear for everyone to see. You’ve been compromised, Your Majesty.”
I looked around the table. The representatives couldn’t look me in the eye, and the human ones glanced at each other repeatedly, probably wondering why the goal of the meeting had changed again. Carter wasn’t there this time because he was still dealing with the disappearance of his son. Last report I’d had, he’d just engaged a powerful coven to track him. They were currently running around the city, chasing smoke.
“Compromised?” I asked calmly.
“These things, those shadows,” Bronson said. “They reek of dark magic.”
“You mean like the kind all over you right now?”
Whoever gave them the confidence to confront Kitty and me would never be stronger than us. The hazy protection cast over the traitors was mediocre at best. I’d watched Kitty swallow it up like a snack when she’d dealt with Justin.
Bronson paled and sat back. Calculation flashed in his eyes befoe fear replaced it. And then even that was gone in moments.
“We still have to discuss Katerina Lordswood,” he said.
He didn’t use her title.
“Even if you change the laws, it won’t change the fact that she’s out there running rampant and the Bureau is just sitting on that investigation.”
You know how things work here, Bronson. Give us evidence of crime, and we’ll be on it,” I said.
What could he say? The people he’d sent to attack April were missing in action? The ones that had almost made it back to

their coven had disappeared mysteriously on the drive back?
“Justin Carter is still missing.” Bronson insisted.
“Yet there isn’t a missing person report downstairs,” I said. “It’s almost as if you’re making all these things up.”

The human representatives shifted uneasily in their seats. The neutral ones didn’t even blink. But Bronson’s people bristled. I felt the spike in their emotions as they sat there with their heads lowered.
“The new laws are already in effect. Your report is now redundant. Is there anything else?”
Silence. I pushed my chair back, leaving Tanner with them again as I walked out of the conference room. The doors had just been opened, and it was still early, but exhaustion sat heavy in my bones. My longing for my mate rolled down the bond, but all I was met with was silence.
I didn’t go back to the office. I took the elevator down and crossed through the skeleton staff in the lobby. They were already whispering. They’d heard the ramblings of what was going on with the Council. Rumours that Bronson had already started spreading.
‘Send out an alert to everyone with the new laws, I mindlinked Tanner.
‘Yes, Your Majesty.
I stood outside and stopped on the steps. The sun warmed my face, but it didn’t reach the cold inside my chest. I didn’t want to go home. My hotel room was too quiet, and Kitty’s apartment was saturated with her scent. My chest felt heavy with emotions I could not release, and being there without her would make things worse.
‘I’m going to Thornhill,’ I added.
Ten minutes later, my unmarked car weaved through the morning traffic. I drove without thinking, pulled by the bond, even knowing that I would not be welcome. I’d made this bed myself. She was mine, yet she wasn’t, and that truth tasted bitter on
my tongue.
By the time I reached the lodge, my beast was pacing. He could feel her now, just in front of us. She was awake and restless. And she was irritated. She already knew I was outside.
I knocked once before I walked in. Her scent hit me fully, twisting my insides. My beast and my magic responded.
Kitty stood in the middle of the room, barefoot, still muddy from whatever she’d done the night before. Dried blood marked her knuckles. Her cheeks were flushed, her features softened with sleep. Her eyes lifted slowly to mine.
There was no warmth in them, just tension.
“Why do you keep interfering?” she asked.
“I’m protecting you.”
“I don’t need it,” she said.
“I know,” I said,
Her expression went still, and a warning flashed in her gaze.
“You’re trying to control me.”
“Never
Not again. I’d already fucked up enough to understand I had to give her her space. But the bond was wrecking me.

We stood too close, so close I could feel the warmth of her skin. I hadn’t realised I’d moved forward until the air between us thickened. Her eyes darkened, and the hunger in her scent sharpened, mixing with frustration. The night of her first hunt. I’d wanted to take her right there, next to Justin’s injured body, and she would have let me. Now her lust mixed with her hatred of me.
My need roared through the bond, hitting that wall. But her head cocked to the side, her gaze studying my face. She could feel me; she could feel everything because I wasn’t holding back.
And then the bond exploded. She opened up to me, allowing me to feel the full force of her emotions, all of them hitting so hard that my beast withdrew in pain.
Rage. Betrayal. Pain. Hunger.
Relief.
I didn’t move. Every instinct screamed at me to close the distance, but I forced myself to stay still. I would never force her to do anything again, even if it killed me.
Her breathing changed. It became shallow and uneven. Her eyes dropped to my mouth, and that single moment shattered what was left of my control.
“You’re still angry,” I said, my voice rough
“Yes.”
“But you’re not stepping back.”
Her jaw tightened. She didn’t deny it.
The air between us thickened until it felt impossible to breathe. My beast surged forward, and this time I didn’t stop him.
My control snapped, and I pulled her against me. When her body collided with mine, heat flared instantly. She didn’t resist. Her hands came up, gripping my shirt, her nails digging in. My mouth crashed against her in a kiss full of desperation and teeth, and she kissed me back just as hard.
I turned and pushed her back against the wall, hooking her leg around my waist as I pressed against her. It had only been days, but it felt like an eternity. Relief flooded my chest. She’d let me touch her again. She’d acknowledged our bond again.
Her fingers slid into my hair, pulling hard, and the sound that left her throat was half anger, half need. My control frayed further. If she told me to stop, I would. If she didn’t… I wasn’t sure I could.
My phone vibrated.
I ignored it. Her fingers tightened in my shirt, dragging me closer, and the sound that left her throat burned straight down to my cock.
The phone vibrated again.
The bond shut down so fast that it felt like someone had ripped omething out of my chest. Shadows appeared behind me, coiling around my arms before they yanked me back.
“No-“I resisted, reaching for her even as the distance widened,
Her hand slipped from my shirt. Her warmth vanished first, and then her scent dulled.
I stood on the other side of the room, breathing hard, watching as the need drained from her eyes. The cold detachment returned, and my emotions hit a wall again.
Are you going to answer it?”

My eyes locked with Kitty’s. The game was starting.
They’d finally found Justin Carter.
