I moved through the trees without making a sound, my bare feet barely disturbing the damp earth. The lodge lights had long since disappeared behind me, swallowed by the distance and thick trees.

Everything inside me had gone quiet. What was left was the sound of these wolves, every single approaching heartbeat calling to me.

The forest stretched ahead, the branches blocking what little moonlight filtered through. The moon was almost full again; perhaps this was the same as the last time. But that thought was just a flicker in my head. It didn’t matter if this was the pull of the moon or something much darker.

My senses stretched outward, and sound sharpened. Leaves shifting, small animals moving beneath the brush, the distant crack of a branch somewhere not too far ahead. My breathing slowed automatically, as if my body was adjusting without conscious thought

Preparing for the hunt.

I’d been numb, cold, and immobile since Hunter left, but now this burned in my chest, in my veins, in my mind. The energy inside me had built up so abruptly that it needed somewhere to go, and the silence inside me welcomed the violence.

So I let it guide me deeper into the woods, towards the heartbea

A scent drifted across my path, and my head lifted slightly as I stopped moving. The part that should have felt caution or concern stayed silent. The only things on my mind were my silent calculations. Distance. Direction. Wind.

I shifted my route without hesitation. Branches brushed my shoulders as I moved faster, weaving between trunks with an ease I had never noticed before. My heartbeat remained steady, and my muscles loosened, ready for the shift.

The wolves moved cautiously, but even in my human form, they sounded too clumsy. My ears caught even the slightest shift of the earth, and the rustling of leaves as they stalked past them.

I followed the scent until I saw them. Six wolves, all different sizes, alphas and betas. My senses locked on the strongest of them. Larger than the others with golden eyes, they were stronger than the wolf I’d fought the night before. They stood in the middle of the groups as if they were confirming their plans. Preparing to ambush me.

They’d stopped near a fallen tree, sniffing the air. I knew they couldn’t scent me or see me. Masking myself was instinctive

but my shadows had also curled around me, wrapping me up like a cocoon.

now,

All of them shifted at the same time and huddled closer together

“Are you sure this will work? They couldn’t get in yesterday,” a beta whispered.

“That Lordswood princess is unstable. We don’t have to get in; she will come out.”

“We have to make sure we get her before the Bureau makes a move to save her. Follow the orders from here on out.”

“Give me a second. I need a piss,” one muttered.

“For fuck’s sake, Charlie,” another grumbled,

They had to shift to communicate, so they were not from the same pack. If they hadn’t been hunting me, I would have found that interesting. The last time different packs had fought side by side like that had been during the war with the Lycans.

The wolf broke off from the group and walked to the tree next to me. I let him do his business. It was the last relief he would ever have.

I stepped forward silently, blending with the darkness as I closed the distance. When the man turned to me, surprise flashed across his eyes.

“Hey-”

My hand closed around his throat before he finished. I slammed him back against a tree, and the impact cracked the bark. His claws raked across my skin, but I barely felt it. My other hand drove into his chest, pushing him harder into the trunk. My wolf pressed forward, and this time I let her. My muscles stretched as I half shifted, towering over him in seconds.

There was a sharp crack, and then his hands fell limply to his sides. When I released him, he slumped to the ground. But there hadn’t been a struggle, and there was no blood. Perhaps the most unsatisfying hunt ever.

When I stepped through the trees, the others were already alert, their eyes darting in all directions. They saw me, a mass of shadows, and backed away. Their snarls broke the silence, but there was no fear yet. And this wouldn’t be fun if I didn’t give them the chance to look their death directly in the eye.

My shadows pulled back without my command, until I stood there, with my stretched sleep shorts and tank top.

“I heard you say you’re looking for me.”

Surprise, and then fear, saturated the air. Not just fear, terror. I knew my eyes had bled violet, an omega’s eyes, yet I stood before them with no fear and no sign of submission. A smile curled my lips. This was more like it.

The first wolf, a beta, launched himself at me. I caught him mid-air and twisted, driving him into the ground with enough force to dent the earth. The motion was smooth and efficient, without an ounce of energy wasted. I learned from my fight last night.

He struggled under my hold, but he was already weak. I lifted him and slammed him down again, and this time, his head struck a rock with a dull crack. He groaned, and blood pooled beneath his head. Then my claws slid into his throat, finishing it before he could recover.

Warmth spread across my fingers, I raised my hand, watching the red drip slowly from my fingers. There was no rush of adrenaline, no shaking hands, only a stillness in my head that called to me just the same.

A branch snapped behind me. I turned quickly before the rest of the wolves attacked. I’d known my speed was something other wolves didn’t possess, but when I used it now, it was instinctive. From wolf to wolf, throat to throat, limb to limb, I moved like a ghost. They lunged, but I was already gone. Claws sliced, bones cracked, and blood sprayed everywhere, soaking the earth.

The clearing had become chaos.

And then silence.

When the bodies piled around me, unmoving, nothing stirred inside me except a quiet satisfaction. But their blood saturated the air, feeding something deeper than hunger. Something colder.

My senses stretched further, towards Stockport, towards the city they had all gathered to hunt me. A slow breath filled my lungs.

For the first time in a while, I fully shifted. My wolf burst free, larger, wrapped in shadows, and faster. My hunt was only just beginning.
