Chapter 234

KAT

The shadows wrapped around me like they had last night, and the grass parted as I walked to the gate. The metal warped slightly, and it was so rusty I’d probably need shots if I touched it. It looked like it hadn’t been opened in years.

“Kitty, wait.”

Hunter pulled a T-shirt over his head as he rushed to my side. He was still barefoot, too, and my attention drifted, catching the length of his stride, the quiet control in his movements, before settling almost absently on his long toes. In the back of my mind, I knew the old me would have become a little flustered.

The reaction didn’t come. I only noticed the absence of it.

“I’ll come with you,” he said.

It didn’t matter to me, one way or the other.

“Open the gate.”

“We don’t use it,” Hunter said as he walked to a digital panel on the wall. “Let’s go to the Bureau first. I have something to show you.”

“Is it about that man?” I asked.

His magic was stronger now. He was obviously calling us out, probably to finish what he started. Though I couldn’t figure out why he hadn’t done that last night. What game was this? His magic was already crawling all over my skin, not just brushing against me now, but threading deeper, tugging at something buried inside

And that thing wanted me to go after him.

“No, it’s… I have a file to show you,” Hunter said. “I think it’s time we talked. We have to get on the same page before we go out there.”

His hesitation pulled my attention back to his face.

“You’re keeping something from me,” I stated.

“No, no more secrets,” Hunter said. “I just didn’t have time to tell you last night. There’s more than one, Kitty. We won’t make it if we fight alone. Let’s meet the others.”

More than one? My mind quickly adjusted to that thought, and my stomach gnawed at me again as I looked back in the direction the magic was calling me.

“The Bureau is full of Bronson’s people,” I said. “And the city is crawling with people sent to hunt me. There’s nowhere to go, Hunter.”

It was a fact. Even at Nathan’s lodge, I wasn’t sure the wards would keep that man out. If there were more of them, we’d be sitting ducks if they surrounded us.

“Then we stay here until we figure things out,” Hunter said, reaching for my hand. “I know this isn’t you. I don’t want you to go out there and… I don’t want you to have any regrets if we survive this.”

This wasn’t me. Or maybe this was the me I wanted to be from now on. The me that was free from all that shit that had kept me up at night. The me that didn’t love Hunter Sterling.

I pulled my hand free from his grasp and looked towards town again.

“We won’t know what we’re up against if we stay inside,” I said. “And if you send someone else out there, you know how that will end.”

I gestured to the gate again. Hunter hesitated briefly before putting his hand on the screen of the rusty security panel. The wall slid open further down, and the protective magic rippled over us. I stepped out onto the street without looking back at him, but I sensed him behind me. I sensed his magic and his beast, restrained beneath his skin. When my shadows thickened around so did his. They didn’t just match mine,

they mirrored them perfectly. Like last night, our magic was stronger together.

The panel slid silently back into place as I started moving. I’d only taken a few steps when an unmarked Bureau vehicle rolled to a stop at the end of the street.

“Tanner will take us back to the Bureau for us to change, and he’ll give his report,” Hunter said.

“I said-”

“We’re not running,” Hunter cut in. “But we’re not going into this blind.”

I felt his alpha aura surge when he said that. The man was used to giving orders and being obeyed. And again,

I knew that was the most logical move. I was newly shifted, and even if I’d been gifted in my studies, that didn’ t beat experience out in the real world.

But that power, whatever it was, was becoming harder to ignore. It wasn’t just calling me, it was closing in. Mr Tanner was already out of the driver’s seat, his expression tight as he held the back door open. His uneasiness and anxiety hung over him like a thick cloud. The Deputy Director of the Bureau had always struck me as someone who could handle anything, but his expression now made me pause.

I walked forward with Hunter beside me and allowed the shadows to pull back once we were next to Mr Tanner. He jumped back into a fighting stance, his claws out, ready to attack us. He hadn’t seen us, hadn’t eyen sensed us.

“I apologise,” he said, standing down as he lowered his head.

He didn’t ask any questions. Even on the night I’d fought the dark magic with the Lycan warriors in the forest, they hadn’t asked any questions. They’d just accepted me as I was. The weird omega werewolf with magic in her veins.

Hunter gestured for me to get in first. When we were settled in the back, Mr Tanner was already in the driver’s seat, sitting rigidly as he drove slowly out of the neighbourhood. After a while, we joined the busy morning traffic. The city moved past in a blur, but I didn’t miss anything. Every flicker of movement, every shadow, every shift in the air. The magic was still there, faint in some places and stronger in others.

Like a trail I could follow if I was to go hunting.

Like a trap laid out just for me.

Hunger twisted deeper in my stomach, strong enough that the urge to tell Mr Tanner to stop the car pressed against my throat. My shadows burst out of me and crawled inside the car. They didn’t stop until Hunter pressed his thigh against mine, until his warmth seeped into my cold flesh. But even then, they didn’t settle back down. They stayed alert, reacting to the magic.

Waiting to hunt.

“Report,” Hunter said.

Mr Tanner didn’t waste any time.

“Bronson and Carter have stirred up more people,” he said. “They’ve told everyone you murdered the youngest Carter heir.”

I wished I had. I still had a score to settle with that family.

“And then he made contact with three very powerful witches.”

My attention snapped to him. Three? If they were all equally strong, only one would have been enough to kill

“A hidden coven, or solitary witches, we don’t know. We were not close enough to overhear the conversation.”

“Where are they?” Hunter asked.

“Still in the industrial district, but Carter and his men are heading towards Mr Rivers. I’ve already warned him.”

Nathan and April, who’d already been assaulted by those monsters just because of her association with me. The collateral damage of this war.

“Bronson was at his desk this morning, as if nothing had happened,” Mr Tanner continued. “He’s stirring the pot in all the departments. Whatever he’s planning, these witches and Carter are backing it with force.”

They had the power, the numbers, and had already made their move. It was a very efficient coup.

“Don’t bother going to the Bureau,” I said. “They’ve been following us since we left the safehouse.”

The strange feeling in my body hadn’t fully vanished. Had he done something to us so he could track us?

“Then where are we going?” Mr Tanner asked.
