Chapter 31

Melanie walked back into the office with blotchy cheeks and eyes so red like she’d been smoking something. She was carrying an empty box, and the glare she threw at me caught me by surprise. Strange, considering she’d just walked out bragging about finally getting recognised.
“What the hell are you looking at?” she hissed, before stomping to her desk.
I watched as she shoved papers and trinkets into the box with shaky hands. Slowly, the hum in the office died down, all eyes on Malanie. Only her sniffles filled the air.
What the hell was going on? Earlier, the entire building had buckled under an aura so powerful I’d almost dropped to my knees. Bree, the wolf, had taken the worst of it; she’d actually slammed down so hard on her knees, I thought her bones cracked. Even now, she sat pale and glassy-eyed, staring through her screen.
“You can laugh now, but I was right all along,” Melanie hissed. “Did you complain about me while he was between your legs?”
She said that, but her body trembled, and her eyes darted to the door.
“You really are dumb,” I said, crossing my arms and smirking when I realised what happened. “You work in a building full of people who can hear everything within miles. I didn’t have to open my mouth. Or my legs.”
Melanie staggered back, and her stationery scattered across the floor while her gaze snapped back to the door. Goddess, what had they done to her?
An email from HR popped into my inbox. I ignored Melanie and opened it eagerly. I finally had full clearance. My stomach flipped, and I almost did a happy dance.
“I heard the Director fired her face-to-face.”
“She’s finished. There’s no coming back from that.”
The Director was now my new favourite person. At least I didn’t have to get my hands dirty. I didn’t spare Melanie another glance, even when she hissed something at the door before she stormed out.
The new assignment was still in the discovery stage and seemed fairly straightforward. I was obviously not working on the same thing as everyone else, but I wouldn’t complain.
Still, Nathan’s threat frayed the edges of my happiness.
Some fresh air would help. I worked better if I saw the crime scene first-hand, so I grabbed my bag and left the building. I wasn’t surprised when the address landed me back in my old neighbourhood.
A wolf had savaged a homeless man in an alley that had no cameras. He’d already been caught, but it was my job to help the lawyers make sure he didn’t walk away. Goddess, I couldn’t wait to be the one putting these bastards away.
The alley reeked of piss and rot. My gaze went over every inch of it. The graffiti-covered walls. The rats

One poster on the back wall flapped in the wind, and I froze. It was in the shadow of the buildings, but I knew those blue eyes. They were my eyes. My face.
My hand trembled as I smoothed the poster to lock gazes with the face of the prisoner I once was. I’d done well to push back the panic Nathan had caused, but I felt it rising again.
“Focus,” I whispered. “I’m Katrine Munroe.”
I stepped away and let the edge of the poster curl back, forcing thoughts of home back where they belonged. My gaze returned to the scene.
I could almost see how it happened. A man who’d lost control of his wolf. A homeless human, trying to find somewhere safe to sleep. The pictures of the scenes weren’t pretty. The Bureau had already scrubbed it clean of evidence because they had the most efficient teams. But it never hurt to look at everything with fresh eyes.
“If it isn’t the lying bitch from upstairs.”
I froze. Just great. Of all the people I could have run into.
Shaking my head, I turned to the two men I’d left sprawled on the parking garage floor a week ago. They looked the same as always. Same hair in messy buns, same dirty clothes, and the top buttons of their filthy shirts unbuttoned to show more than I wanted to see.
Though after being with Hunter, every other chest wouldn’t look as good.
“I wouldn’t have had to lie if you’d taken no for an answer,” I said coolly.
Todd and Sam wore nearly identical snarls on their faces as they approached me, blocking off my only route
to escape.
“How’s your head?” I asked Todd. I was sure I’d cracked something when I hit him with my helmet.
“Did you stitches.”

It was broad daylight, and this alley was still attracting some attention after the crime. Were they really going to do this here?
“And you nearly broke my ribs,” Sam snarled, his fists clenching.
I stepped back until I hit the wall, far from any prying eyes, as they passed the mouth of the alley.
“I’ve tried to let you guys off easy,” I said. “You really make it hard.”
They laughed as they slipped deeper into the shadows with me. Right where no one would see them.

years ago, men like this had made me run and cower in fear. But Mal had taught me how to stand up for myself.

The poster beside me flapped in the breeze again, and Todd cocked his head, his attention on it. He nudged Sam, gesturing to it.
“Hey, doesn’t she look like the lost princess?”
