**By Amara Grant**
**Chapter 60**

**HUNTER**

The air was thick with a scent that was hauntingly familiar, yet it was tainted with the essence of someone else. The chocolatey aroma that had once felt like home was now replaced by an unsettling reminder of betrayal. I quickly shoved the thought aside, unwilling to entertain the notion that I could sense the princess’s lingering fragrance while I was tangled up with Kitty. It felt like a disloyalty I couldn’t bear to acknowledge.

Kitty sat across from me, nibbling at her food like it was a chore, her eyes fixed on the plate rather than meeting my gaze. How could she still contemplate leaving after everything we’d shared? Perhaps she was unaware of the mark on her neck, the one that would eventually fade but would always hold its weight in meaning. She belonged to me, whether she realized it or not.

“I meant every word I said,” I asserted, my voice steady but filled with urgency. “I truly want us to work things out.” I took a breath, feeling the weight of my own mistakes. “I know I shattered your trust, and I’m willing to fight to earn it back. Take all the time you need.”

I was determined to remove every hurdle in our path. Rivers and that bastard had to be dealt with. Once they were out of the picture, I was confident she would finally let her walls down. She wouldn’t need Rivers’ filthy money anymore.

I forced myself to push aside the image of how strongly his scent had clung to her. Some humans failed to understand loyalty, but Kitty was different; she had set clear boundaries, demanding no intimacy with anyone else while we were together.

But she had ended things between us, and perhaps that meant those rules no longer applied. Maybe she had allowed Rivers to touch her.

My grip tightened around the fork, the metal bending under my pressure before I realized it and quickly dropped it back onto the plate.

“Since you know who I am, you’re aware that I’m involved in the serial killer case,” I said, trying to steer the conversation into safer waters.

“Serial killer?” Kitty asked, finally lifting her gaze to meet mine, a flicker of concern crossing her features.

“The murder at the gym is just the latest in a string of horrors,” I confessed, my heart racing at the thought of her safety. “I’d feel a lot better if you were with me or at least somewhere safer than this place or that gym.”

He hadn’t escalated to targeting human girls yet, but with the information I had gathered, it was clear that Kitty would be safer if she returned to that cabin. The attack at the gym felt like a direct message to me, a warning I couldn’t ignore.

I kept the knowledge of her hiding place to myself, knowing it would only add to her anxiety. Silence stretched between us as she continued to pick at her food, and I felt the heavy weight of my failures. I hadn’t done enough to make her feel secure with me. Humans often needed words to feel reassured; she wouldn’t grasp the depth of the bond between a wolf and his mate right away. But I held onto the hope that she would come to understand it in time.

“I’ve got a burner phone with my new number saved on it. It’s unmonitored,” I said, my voice softer now. “Please take it with you. I just want to know you can reach me if anything happens.”

Kitty nodded, but her silence lingered like a heavy fog, even after I cleared our plates. I was desperate to uncover the truth behind the blood that had stained her last night, to know what had transpired, but I knew I hadn’t yet earned her trust! Rivers would eventually spill the details.

“I’ll drive you wherever you need to go,” I offered as she knelt by the door, tying her shoelaces, a small bag slung over her shoulder.

“I’ll be fine,” she replied, still avoiding my eyes. Just like that, she stepped outside, leaving no kiss, no smile—nothing.

My chest tightened painfully as she walked away, each step feeling like a dagger to my heart. Resisting the urge to follow her was a monumental struggle, but I had to prioritize her safety. I moved to the window, scanning the neighborhood for what felt like the millionth time until her taxi pulled up to the curb. Elijah hadn’t approached me all night, but I needed to be sure.
