So in his mind, everything I did was just a transaction.
I don’t say anything else. Just open the door and get out.
I don’t look back–just walk up the stairs one step at a time.
When I get home, I close the door, lean back against it, and slowly slide down to the floor.
I pull the card out of my pocket and stare at it as tears start falling.
Then pick up my phone and call Jett’s lawyer.
“Parker, Jett getting out?”
“Yeah. They dropped the case. He’ll be home tonight.”
“Thanks.”

I start deleting every number in my phone.
Then walk over to the empty wall, pick up a pen, and write one last Post–It note.
[Harlow, go somewhere nobody knows you. Then forget everything.]
The next day, Jett gets released.
He comes to my place, sees the empty apartment and that note on the wall, and loses it.
By then, I’m already on a train heading to another city.
