Chapter 2
I pulled all–nighters for a week straight to finish the project.
Late that night, Zach’s text came through.
Got something important tonight. We’ll do your birthday later, okay?]
Not surprised. Not even close.
Last birthday, Gianna called once. And he left me to fly halfway around the world for a sunrise with her.
Birthday before that, he had some big exhibition overseas. Glanna went as his model.
And me? What was I doing?
I cooked a whole spread by myself. Waited from dawn till dusk. Then dusk till dawn.
Wasn’t until I saw them trending on gossip blogs–looking like the perfect power couple–that I learned my husband of years actually COULD paint portraits.
He just never painted ME.
Gianna was his only muse.
Back then, jealousy and hurt made me spiral. I called him nonstop like some crazy person.
Finally, he answered.
My end? Hysterical demands.
His end? Exhausted brush–offs.
Nora, you’re not a kid. Can you stop being so immature?”
But I couldn’t let it go.
Had to push. Had to know.
Zach, who matters more–me or Gianna?”
ilence. Long, crushing silence.
o long I thought he’d never answer.
Then, casual as anything: “Stop being dramatic.”
Fine. Then I’m burning those paintings!”
That broke him. Panic flooded his voice, anger too.
Nora Bennett, you WOULDN’T DARE!
Watch met
hung up, hands trembling
Grabbed a hammer and stormed into his studio,
But standing in front of those canvases, I couldn’t move.
Chapter 2
Brushstrokes really do carry emotion, don’t they?
Gianna looked gorgeous in his work. Even just sitting still, she radiated youth, life, charm.
Every stroke was filled with love.
That night. I sat in that studio until sunrise.
Cried the whole time.
Cried until I had nothing left. Until the love inside me dried up completely.
