Chapter 6
The meeting ate up my entire day.
Soon as it ended, I hopped on a train for a work trip out of state.
Didn’t come back for two whole weeks.
On the ride home, I scrolled through social media and saw Gianna’s post.
A selfie.
she had on this flowy, see–through dress showing off her figure. Behind her stood Zach with his paintbrush, looking completely mesmerized.
Caption: “Zach’s hand healed up and he’s already painting me again~”
I looked at it for a second, then tapped like without thinking much of it.
That evening, I was having dinner with a client when Zach called.
His voice was tight, barely holding back rage.
Nora, seriously–what’s with liking that post? You trying to act like you don’t give a damn when you’re obviously jealous?”
Made absolutely no sense.
I didn’t respond. Just ended the call.
Immediately, my phone started lighting up nonstop.
Gianna just moved back–needs a standout piece to make her mark. That’s why I’m rushing the painting.]
My hand’s totally fine now. Don’t worry.]
Nora, I haven’t eaten a real meal in two weeks. When are you coming back to cook?]
WTH? Why would HIS hand be my problem?
And seriously–he’s a grown–ass man. Not like he’s gonna waste away.
My phone kept buzzing.
The client glanced over. “Ms. Bennett, if you need to handle that, go ahead.”
stepped out into the hallway.
Called him back. He answered instantly.
Nora, do you ever actually look at your phone?”
same old attitude–entitled, accusatory.
I pressed my fingers to my forehead.
“Zach, when we got back together, we said no paranoia, no controlling each other’s lives. Ring a bell?
I’m in the middle of work. Can you not blow up my phone? Seriously, don’t you have anything else going on?”
The line went quiet for a long time.
Chapter
Then CRASIL
Sounded like his phone hit the floor. Then the line went dead.
Got home past midnight..
The second I walked in, strong arms came out of nowhere and locked around my waist.
Next thing I knew, I was yanked against a solid chest.
Nora, what’s the deal with never being home?”
igarette smoke hit me right away. I coughed.
ve always hated smoking. But in all these years, Zach never stopped.
Funny though–when he went to see Gianna, he’d shower first and put on clean, ironed clothes.
Before I could dwell on that, pain flared across my lips.
Lach bit down softly, voice low and rough. “God, I missed you…”
instantly shoved him hard.
Complete silence.
backed
Shut the door in his face.
tight as it clicked shut, the hallway light came on.
t caught those eyes–the ones I used to get lost in.
Now? All I saw was hurt mixed with something darker. Anger, maybe. Resentment.
