Chapter 10
The next morning in the studio.
Gianna walked in wearing a silk slip dress, then let it slide off without hesitation.
She stood naked in front of the easel, striking his favorite pose.
‘Zach, let’s keep going. I’m ready.”
Zach gripped his brush, but his hand wouldn’t move.
The body on the canvas was already there–curves sketched out, that ruby necklace gleaming at her throat.
But where her face should’ve been?
Nothing. Just blank space, like it was covered in fog.
He stared at that emptiness, but all he could see was Nora from last night–the way she’d turned and walked away, calm but final.
The slight downturn of her lips when she spoke. The clarity in her eyes after every trace of love had drained out.
Even the way she’d refused to cry when those bracelet shards sliced her fingers–stubborn, unbreaking.
t was all so clear, like she was standing right there in front of him.
His brush moved on its own.
sketching. Filling in color.
Every stroke flowed smoother than anything he’d ever painted before.
When he finally came back to himself, the girl on the canvas had a complete face.
Nora’s face.
Her features carried that distant look, but somehow she seemed more alive than she’d ever been in real life.
‘Zach! What the HELL are you doing?!”
Gianna’s furious voice shattered the moment.
She stared at that face–one that had absolutely nothing to do with her and her expression went dark.
She lunged forward, trying to knock the whole easel over.
All that soft, fragile sweetness vanished in an instant, replaced by raw, ugly rage.

She bit her lip, eyes flooding with tears as she moved closer.
Then she wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her lips urgently against his.
‘Zach, I’m sorry. I just love you so much. I’m terrified of losing you–I’ve been scared since we were kids,”
Her warm lips touched his, but Zach jerked his head to the side,
Gianna’s kiss grazed his cheek instead, leaving behind an awkward, sticky feeling.
This should’ve been the perfect moment–the intimacy with Gianna he’d always imagined,
But Nora’s voice crashed through his mind instead.
le remembered the careful hope in her tone when she’d asked,
Could you paint me? Just once?”
The tremor in her voice when she discovered his studio filled with Gianna’s portraits.
The quiet devastation beneath her calm when she said, “Then we’re done.”
Cach’s chest clenched tight, like someone was squeezing his heart. It hurt.
Put your clothes on.”
ach pushed her arms off his neck, voice flat and cold.
Gianna froze. “Zach…”
he looked up at him with those big teary eyes, trying to look pitiful.
That move always worked before.
But this time, Zach just said: “This painting doesn’t suit you.”
Then he wouldn’t even look at her anymore, “I’ll have the driver take you home.”
You CAN’T do this to me!”
Manna’s voice broke, tears streaming down her face.
We grew up together! You PROMISED you’d only ever paint me–that I’d be the ONLY one your brush would capture!
