Chapter 15
I left the country to finish the degree I’d dropped when depression swallowed me whole years ago.
Julian asked how long I’d be gone.
Told him I wasn’t sure. A year, maybe more.
Needed to actually sort myself out first.
Right before I flew out, I caught one last piece of news about Zachi.
He’d dropped off the face of the earth.
Someone claimed they’d spotted him–depressed, barely holding it together.

Life overseas was peaceful.
Back on campus. Lectures, library marathons, actual routine. Felt good.
But I kept getting this weird feeling–like someone was watching me.
Walking home after dark, I’d hear footsteps.
Spin around–nobody.
One night some creep started tailing me. I freaked.
Then this car came out of nowhere, headlights blasting the street. Guy bolted.
Other weird stuff too.
Busted hallway light? Magically fixed by sunrise.
snowy evening? Brand new umbrella propped against my door.
Someone was definitely around.
Never caught sight of them though.
Thought maybe Julian at first, but he was still stateside.
Thought maybe someone else. Zero leads.
Eventually figured whoever it was wasn’t dangerous. Stopped stressing about it.
Six months later, Julian flew over for a conference.
We grabbed dinner.
Some upscale place with a violinist playing in the corner.
