“She’ll come around in time,” I said, my voice wavering slightly, uncertain if I was trying to comfort him or myself. “Once her memories resurface, once she adapts to everything that’s shifted—”
“Maybe,” Kael replied, his tone lacking conviction. “Or perhaps this is just what she required. A complete separation from whatever we were before. An opportunity to forge something new, unburdened by the weight of our shared past.”
I thought about that, holding back the words that threatened to spill forth. Just like me, I mused silently. Just like the fresh start we were attempting—something untainted, free from the convoluted history that lingered between her and Kael.
As we reached our quarters, Kael gently ushered me inside, pulling the door shut behind us with a soft click that echoed in the quiet room. He leaned against the door, enveloping me in his arms, and for a fleeting moment, we simply stood there, wrapped in each other’s warmth.
“Thank you for today,” he whispered, his breath warm against my hair. “For being there with me. For allowing me to—” He hesitated, his words faltering as if he were searching for the right expression. “For being everything I need.”
“I’m your mate,” I replied, my voice steady yet soft. “Being what you need is literally what I signed up for.”
He pulled back, just enough to meet my gaze, his expression turning serious. “Aria, you’re so much more than that. More than just my mate, my Luna, my partner in this political dance. You are becoming…” He paused, inhaling deeply as if the weight of his emotions was almost too much to bear. “You’re becoming everything. I need you to understand that. I need you to believe it, even when your doubts are shouting otherwise.”
I searched his eyes, desperate for any hint of insincerity, any sign that he was merely saying what he thought I wanted to hear instead of what he truly felt. But all I found was raw emotion, unwavering commitment, and a love that, though still in its infancy, seemed to grow stronger with each passing day.
“I believe you,” I said, and in that moment, I truly did. “I’m working on trusting it fully, on not allowing my insecurities to undermine what we have. But I believe you.”
Then he kissed me—a gentle, tender kiss that was a world apart from the passionate claiming we had shared earlier. This was connection in its purest form. Affection that spoke volumes. Just two souls choosing each other, despite the myriad reasons they perhaps shouldn’t.
When we finally broke apart, Kael headed off to wash up while I changed into fresh clothes. I found myself standing before the mirror, my fingers tracing the marks he had left on my skin. They were already starting to fade—thanks to our wolf physiology, they would likely vanish by morning—but for now, they stood as visible reminders of the bond we had forged.
Evidence that I belonged here. That someone wanted me here. That despite the shadows of Kael’s past with Ivory or anyone else, he was choosing to build something new with me.
