Chapter 29
Silas’s POV
I parked in the alley near her office and killed the engine.
Half the window was down. Evening air came through carrying the smell of street food – something fried, something sweet.
I wasn’t hungry.
Jessica’s words had been looping in
over. I knew I shouldn’t let them my head since this morning. Over and
were two different things.
I turned the music on. Turned it off. Tapped my fingers on the steering wheel twice. Stopped.

My tail slipped out of the seat gap before I could catch it sweeping across the cushion, restless. I pressed it back down with my hand.
She said she’d come. She’s never lied to you.
I breathed in. Looked toward the office building.
Sometime later, two raps on the car window.
I turned. Aurora was leaning down, grinning at me through the glass, eyes curved, a paper cup in one hand and her bag slung over her shoulder. A straw was clamped between her teeth.
She pulled the door open, slid in, brought a gust of outside air with her,
Wait long?”
I shook my head. “Just got here.”
I didn’t look away from her face.
She chewed the straw, frowned a little. “What?”
“Nothing.” I reached for the ignition.
my shoulder.
Her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen. Then,
her expression shifted.

“Let me take this,” she said, and pushed the door open again.
and
She walked maybe ten steps toward the curb and stopped, turning half away from the car.
My hand sat on the steering wheel. My eyes tracked her back without asking permission.
She was taking a call. Without telling me who. Facing away from me.
My ears came up. Dropped. Came up again.
I turned my head away. Turned the music back on. Cranked it just loud enough to cover the wind.
I wasn’t going to eavesdropping.
My knuckles went white on the wheel.
“Fucking Connor,” I muttered under my breath.

She came back a minute later, hung up, got in, and shut the door.
Nilled the music.
The car went quiet.
“Who was it?” I asked. Tried to keep my voice level.
“Matching Center.”
My fingers shifted on the wheel. “About Connor?”
She hesitated. “Drive first. I’ll tell you on the way.”
I pulled out and merged onto the main road. The city lights were coming on. I kept my eyes forward.
After a block, I spoke. My voice came out lower than I meant it to.
“Aurora.” I swallowed. “I know you… cared about him. A lot. You did everything for him. He was with you for a long time.”
The words felt like gravel.
“If you can’t let him go, if you want him back, I won’t stop you.” I gripped the wheel harder. “But can you… not send me away? Even if you bring him back, leave a spot for me. Any spot. I’ll be good. I’ll do anything.”
I forced the last part out. “Just… love me a little too. Please.”
My ears flattened against my hair. My tail wrapped tight around the edge of my seat. I kept my breathing quiet. Like if I breathed too loud it’d make
the answer worse.
I was already planning it in my head – if she said sorry, I’d say it’s okay. I‘ d go back to the Center. Let them reassign me. I just didn’t want her to

feel guilty.
She didn’t answer for a long time.

My chest went cold. I started wondering if I should pull over now or wait until we got home to pack.
Then the passenger seat moved
She turned toward me. Her hand came up, caught my chin, and turned my face so I had to look at her.
I blinked. Her eyes were right there. Close enough to see myself in them!
“You’re wrong,” she said.
My throat closed. Here it comes
But she didn’t let go. She held my chin and looked straight at me and said. “The Matching Center just called to confirm Connor’s transfer is complete. He’s out of the city. I won’t have anything to do with him anymore.”
”
“There’s only one beastman in my head right now. And it’s you.”
My ears shot up. “…Really?” My voice didn’t sound like mine.
“Of course.”
I didn’t think. I unbuckled, yanked her across the console, and kissed her.
Hard. Fast. Like I could crush every second of doubt into the space between our mouths. She made a noise, then her hand bunched in the fabric of my shirt, fingers twisting, while the other arm flailed for the cupholder and barely saved her drink from tipping.
