Chapter 14

Chapter 34

I left my hand there.

Red light. The car stopped

My phone rang in my bag.

I pulled it out. Mia’s name on the screen.

I answered.

Before I could say hello, Mia’s voice exploded through the speaker.

“Did you see the news? Phoebe’s out. Her parents went to the Authority themselves to handle the bail. Dumped a ton of money, and now she’s home.”

“I figured.” I said calmly.

“Like – what? She hired someone to kidnap and murder you, and she just walks? That’s insane.”

Silas glanced at me. I kept my face neutral.

Mia sputtered on the other end for another thirty seconds. I let her. When she ran out of steam, I said. “What do you want me to do? Storm the Authority with a pitchfork?”

“…Fair,” Mia said finally. “You’ve got it handled.”

“Always do.” I hung up. The light turned green. Silas pressed the gas. I dropped the phone back in my bag.

“Phoebe’s out,” I said. “Her parents bailed her.”

Silas was quiet for a few seconds. Then. “What do you want to do?”

I thought about it. Not for long.

“For now? Nothing we can change. Let it go.” I paused. “If she comes at me again, I’ll make sure she doesn’t get out next time. Permanently.”

Silas looked at me, almost amused. “You sound like a little tiger right now,” he said.

I reached over and punched his shoulder. Lightly. “Drive.”

He laughed, and the sound broke something tight in my chest.

“I’m tired,” I said after a minute, rubbing the side of my waist where I’d almost hit the floor. “Can we skip cooking tonight? Eat out?”

“No problem. I know a place,” he said. “Not far.”

He tapped the turn signal, swung the wheel, and we turned onto a smaller street.

The restaurant was tucked between a bookstore and a closed flower shop. Not fancy. Small windows, warm yellow light spilling through the glass, the kind of place you’d walk past if you didn’t know it was

there.

Silas got out, went to the front, and gave his name to the host. I

followed half a step behind, eyes drifting around the room.

The corner booth caught my attention. I stopped walking.

Three people sat there. My father. My mother. And between them, smiling, picking at a plate of dessert with a silver fork, Phoebe.

A small bottle of champagne sat on the table, half-empty. Two glasses poured. My parents were leaning toward her, laughing at something she’d said. It looked like a celebration.

Phoebe looked up first. When her saw me, her smile froze. The fork stopped halfway to her mouth.

Her eyes locked onto mine across the room.

Across the room, my mother stood up first.

Her chair scraped against the floor loud, sharp, the kind of sound that made the nearby tables flinch/She crossed the space in quick, heavy steps, heels striking hard, and stopped right in front of me.

Her voice was anger. “How dare you show your face here.”

I stood under the warm light of the restaurant and didn’t move. “A murderer can sit in a restaurant eating dessert and drinking champagne. Why can’t I?”

Her face flushed red. Instantly. My father came up right behind her. His eyes locked onto me – cold, furious — and before I could blink, his hand came up, palm open, swinging toward my face. “You ungrateful girl!”

-It never landed.

Silas’s hand moved fast, caught my father’s wrist mid-air and closed around it. His fingers locked tight. My father’s arm hung there. Suspended. He yanked. Once. Twice. Couldn’t pull it free.

The red in his face drained to white. “Aurora, tell him to let me go this instant! Do you really want everyone here laughing at our family?”

His words almost made me laugh. That certainly wasn’t what they’d been saying a moment ago, when they were insulting me and trying to hit me.
