“Not only am I not saving him, I’m going to make sure he stays in there long enough to earn it.”
I backed out of the conversation and opened my contacts. Scrolled. Found a number I’d saved months ago and never used. Hit dial.
“Colosseum canine beastman scheduling – that’s your department, right?” I said when someone picked up. “I need a favor. Give Connor the hardest matchups you’ve got. He always thought he was untouchable. Let’s see how well he actually fights.” I hung up they could ask questions.

Then I dialed a different number again. “I need everything you can find on an S-class tiger beastman,” I said, voice low. “Name’s Silas Blackwood. As fast as you can. Money isn’t an issue.”
I ended the call and tossed the phone onto the bed.
My palm was still bleeding. I brought it up to my mouth and ran my tongue across the cut. Salt and copper.
I looked out the window. The distant city lights stretched across the horizon, a flat glow against the dark.

“I’m not done.”
Aurora’s POV
I walked into the office the next morning and felt the atmosphere shift before I even sat down.
A cluster of people stood by the kitchenette, voices low. When I appeared, the conversation cut off mid-sentence. Eyes darted toward me and then away, quick, guilty.
I ignored it. Walked to my desk. Dropped my bag. Mia was at my side before my chair had stopped rolling.
“Did you
hear?” she whispered, leaning in. “Emily crashed and burned with Kane yesterday.”
My hand paused over the keyboard. I glanced at her. Encouraged, she immediately launched into an animated account of everything that had happened yesterday.
It turned out that not long after I left Kane’s place, Emily showed up as well. I didn’t want to assume the worst about her, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that she had followed me.
Mia continued, barely containing herself. “Apparently it went okay at first, but then something happened. Kane’s literally threw her out. She came back with her hair a mess, face white as paper.” Mia dropped her voice further. “Word is Kane’s housekeeper exact words were

I didn’t respond. Just pressed the power button on my computer.
Mia’s eyes sparkled. “Aren’t you curious what happened?”
“No,” I said, setting my water glass down. “Do your job. Stop gossiping.
I turned to the screen and got to work.
Not long after, my phone rang. Boss wanted me in his office.
I walked in and found Emily already standing in front of the desk. Head down. The tail end of a dressing-down was still echoing in the
room.
“-I sent you to handle a project, not to embarrass us in front of the client! Do you have any idea what looked like when they called me?”
The boss saw me, stopped mid-sentence, and rearranged his face. The furrow in his brow hadn’t fully smoothed out, but his tone shifted instantly.
“Aurora. Come here.”
He slid a printed confirmation sheet across the desk. “Kane’s interview project is yours. Exclusive. First session next week. His secretary will

Behind me, Emily was dismissed too. Her footsteps followed mine down the corridor, picking up pace, and then her hand shot out and blocked my path at the corner near the stairwell.
“What did you do?” she hissed. “What kind of underhanded move did you pull to get this?”
I stopped. I ked at her. My expression didn’t change. “Just because you hit
