I Rejected My Obsessive Werebeast novel Chapter 51

Chapter 51

Aurora’s POV

The car merged onto the highway. The city fell away behind us

Kane glanced at me from the driver’s seat. You look tired.

I touched my cheek. It’s fine. Just a lot these past couple days. Haven’t been sleeping well.

He was quiet for a moment. His hands stayed steady on the wheel.

Then he said: I should have spoken up. When Phoebe put that photo out.

I shook my head. Don’t apologize. With your position, any statement from you would’ve been twisted. People would’ve said you were defending me because of personal feelings. Silence was the better move.

He listened without answering right away. Then he turned to me, held my gaze for a moment, and smiled.

You’re interesting,he said.

I didn’t answer. I just looked down and opened the folder in my lap.

We got to the airport. Checked in. Bo

which angles mattered to them, and which questions they’d rather we avoided.

I pulled out my notebook and jotted down the important detailsdates names, locations. Every so often, I stopped him to clarify something, and he answered directly.

Once I had everything down, I closed the notebook.

Get some rest,he said. Still a while before we land.

I leaned back in my seat and closed my eyes.

I didn’t sleep. The engine hummed beneath me, and every so often, a patch of turbulence gave the cabin a small jolt. I drifted in and out of wakefulness, my thoughts moving from one face to anotherSilas, Emily, Connor standing in that dark corridor with tears running down his face.

I stayed that way for a while, eyes closed, letting the hours pass.

We landed. Took a car to the hotel.

The lobby was clean. Modern. The kind of place that smelled like citrus candle and polished stone.

The front desk agent typed for a moment, then paused and tried again, her brow furrowing as she looked at the screen.

I’m sorry, she said. Due to a scheduling adjustment, one of your

reserved rooms has an issue. We only have the presidential suite available now.

I blinked. “Can you find us another hotel?

The front desk nodded. This is the only property within walking distance.

I hesitated.

Kane spoke before I could. The presidential suite has multiple rooms. It won’t be an issue. I can sleep on the living room sofa.

I looked at him. He was already reaching for his ID, so I took the key card and headed for the elevator.

The suite was large. Too large for two people who weren’t together. A living room. A dining area. Two bedrooms on opposite sides of a hallway. A kitchen. A balcony.

I dropped my bag on the nightstand in the bedroom. Kicked off my shoes. Lay down on the bed facefirst.

The mattress was soft, and the sheets smelled faintly of hotel detergent- clean, sterile, and unfamiliar.

I rolled onto my side, pulled out my phone, and opened the video call app.

I called Silas.

He answered after two rings, and his face filled the screen.

Behind him was our living room. The lamp was on, and everything looked just as he’d left itthe blanket folded over the arm of the couch, the

remote lying on the cushion.

Just arrived. Checked in.

How’s the hotel?

Fine.I paused. There was a small issue with the rooms. They only had one suite left.

His tiger ears rose through his hair and perked up, the tips twitching once. He straightened in his seat.

What do you mean, one suite? His voice went flat. Who are you staying with?

Kane’s here too. But the suite has several rooms. I have my own bedroom.

His brow furrowed. That’s still not okay.He got to his feet, the camera shifting as he started pacing. “Let me check the earliest flight. I can be there-

Silas. My voice stayed calm. It’s fine. It’s not a onebedroom place. There’s a living room and a hallway between us. They’re adding another room tomorrow. It’s really not a problem.

He stopped and looked at the screen, eyes narrowed. His tail was visible at the edge of the frame, flicking back and forth in short, restless sweeps.

He stared at me for several seconds. Then, grudgingly: Lock your door.

I will.

Both locks. The chain too.

Silas.I softened my voice. Go to sleep. It’s late there. I’ll call you tomorrow morning.

His tail slowed, and his ears drooped slightly. He looked at me through the screen, clearly unhappy but willing to listen.

Okay,he muttered, sounding like he really didn’t want to say it.

I smiled. Goodnight.

Goodnight.

The screen went dark.

I set the phone on the nightstand. Rolled onto my side.
