because I’m fast and I stay out of the way.”
“Im investigating the disappearances,” I said. “Do you know where they’re taking them?”
She shook her head, gripping the mop handle tighter. “I don’t know. But every night after midnight, that iron door at the end of the hall opens for while. Someone takes the werebeasts from their cages and leads them through. Once, when I was cleaning, I peeked through the crack in the door. At the end of the corridor there was light – and I smelled something. Medicine. Strong.”
She hunched her shoulders, making herself smaller. “That’s all I know. Please don’t go any further down.”
I nodded. “Thanks. Be careful.”
I turned to leave.
Three steps later, a figure stepped out from the opposite corner and blocked my path.
Connor.
He was leaning against the wall like he’d been standing there for a while. His eyes moved from my face to the edge of my pocket, where the card was visible.
His brow furrowed. “Where’d you get that card?”
I didn’t answer. “What are you doing on this level?”
He didn’t answer either. Instead he dropped his voice so low I had to strain to hear it. “If you go down now, you’ll run into the shift change. If you really need to investigate, wait two hours. I’ll find a way to shut off the cameras in that section.”

He stepped around me, heading toward the other end of the corridor. As he passed, he paused.
“This time I’m helping you because I owe you. But that’s it. Don’t let me catch you down here again.”
I stood there, not moving.
From somewhere ahead, the electronic beep of a door lock unlocking echoed through the corridor.
I looked down at the card in my palm. It was warm now, heated by my body temperature.
I turned and walked quickly back up the stairs.
By the time I reached the surface level, it was fully dark outside.
Streetlight filtered through the glass door at the end of the corridor, casting a grid of bright squares across the floor. I pushed the door open and stepped out.
The air was fresher here. Cool. A breeze drifted in from the end of the street, carrying the particular chill of early night.
I pulled out my phone and sent Silas a message.
Me: I’m out. She’s safe.
The reply came almost instantly.
Silas: Car’s in the usual spot.
I walked out of the arena entrance. The dark car was parked on the opposite side of the street, the driver’s side window rolled down. Silas tilted his head to look at me.

I crossed the street quickly, pulled open the passenger door, and slid in:
fingers were still cold as I reached for the seatbelt. Silas reached over and took my hand in his. He didn’t say anything.
Then he started the car.

Chapter 63
Aurora’s POV
I changed into my slippers and sat down on the couch.
Silas followed, dropping down next to me. He picked up the cold glass of water on the coffee table, stood, and came back with a fresh cup of hot tea. Set it within my reach without a word.
I told him everything: the corridor, Freya, the heavy bucket she was dragging, and her warning that the werebeasts were being taken downstairs.
When I mentioned the smell of medicine and the iron door at the end of the hall, Silas’s tiger ears pressed flat against his head.
“You’ve already been down there tonight,” he said. “You’ve already made contact. That’s enough for a preliminary report. You don’t need to go back down yourself.”
“I’m going again tomorrow,” I said. “If I time it with the shift change like Connor said, I should be able to reach the lower level.”
Silas didn’t speak for a long moment. The silence stretched between us, heavy and still.
“If you’re going down,” he said finally, “I’m going with you.”
I opened my mouth to refuse.
He looked at me. In his eyes that told me this wasn’t up for discussion.
