Chapter 12

The Mitchells crashed.

Lost the pitch. Bad press piled on. Banks called in loans. Investors pulled out. Jason’s overseas investments

cratered.

The once-great Mitchell Group crumbled.

Then a bombshell. Rose didn’t have asthma.

Lucas found out. Scrolling short videos, he stumbled on clips of Rose over the past year. Partying in nightclubs. The “fragile, can’t-take-stress” porcelain doll?

Smoking, grinding against men on dance floors, partying harder than anyone.

He confronted her with the videos. She slipped up in panic.

Twenty years. Every illness, every weakness, an act. Even the avalanche “asthma attack”? She just didn’t want to stay there another second.

Heard the Mitchell house exploded that night. Jason went ballistic, threw her out. Lucas called off their

engagement on the spot.

I heard this circus from Ethan. We were at our celebration dinner. He cut my steak, casual.

“Lucas called. Wants to see you. I said no.”

I forked a piece of steak. “Good. He makes me sick now.”

Ethan smiled, poured me wine. “What about Jason? Heard he’s selling his cars and houses. Scrambling for

cash.”

I paused. “His problem. People pay for their choices. He trusted an outsider for twenty years. That’s the price.”

“What if he begs? He’s been searching for you.”

I thought about it.

“Let him beg. That’s how begging works.”
