Chapter 7
[Wren, are you okay?]
On day four, Seraphina messaged me.
[I’m fine.]
[Wren, what happened between you and Ky? He’s like a completely different person. He
packed up all my stuff and even asked for the necklace back.]
The point of her message wasn’t what happened between us. It was that her stuff got
taken away.
[Ask him.]
[I did. He won’t say. Are you guys fighting?]
[We’re not fighting. I left.]
[Left? Where?]
[I left him.]
The typing bubble appeared, disappeared, then stayed for a long time. Finally, a long
message.
[Wren, I’m going to say something I probably shouldn’t. Ky is really good to you. He’s just
soft-hearted and nice to everyone. Don’t be jealous just because he’s nice to me. We’re really
just friends. Leaving over this is so not worth it.]
She thought I left because I was jealous. Thought I was making a big deal out of
nothing.
[Seraphina, tell me exactly how he’s good to me.]
A few minutes went by before she finally replied.
[He was with you for five years. He bought you a home. He was going to marry you.
Every time he talks about you, he says you’re so independent and capable. He really admires
you.]
Admires. Not misses. Not aches for. Not can’t bear to lose. Admires. Like admiring a

cactus that never needs watering.
[Seraphina, do you know that every year he took you to Japan, I waited at home alone?]
[Those were business trips-]
[Do you know that while he custom-ordered your cherry blossom necklace, he bought my engagement ring online without a second thought?]
[Do you know he forgot to even send me a cash gift on my birthday, but he gave you birthday surprises?]
[Do you know that when he told me not to visit his mom too often, you were going three
or four times a month?]
[Do you know that when he helped you move a cabinet, he’d told me his back hurt when I asked him to move a box of books?]
The typing bubble flickered, then stopped. She sent a voice message, her voice a little shaky. “Wren, I really didn’t know any of this. Ky never told me you were unhappy. I thought
you two were great.”
A few seconds of silence, then another voice message. “But Wren… who’s going to go to
Japan with him now? I don’t feel right about him going alone.”
Her first reaction was “I didn’t know.” Her second was-who’s going to go with him. Not
“I’m sorry,” not “I shouldn’t have.” It was “who’s going to go with him.”
[Seraphina, he was my fiancé. Not yours.]
[Wren, you’re twisting my words. I didn’t mean it like that-]
[You meant every word. And we both know it.]
She went quiet. A moment later, a text.
[Wren, let me be honest with you. Ky has always had a place for me in his heart. You have to see that. In five years, did he ever take you on a real trip? Did he ever take a good
photo of you? Did he ever remember your birthday?]
[He was with you because you’re the kind of girl you marry. With me, it’s because we
have fun. You’re the sensible choice. I’m the one he loves to be with. It’s not the same.]

I read those words, my fingers cold. She was right. In Kyler’s eyes, I was the one you
marry. Seraphina was the one you love.
[Thanks for telling me.]
