It happened again. Just like in my previous life.
Caleb and I were already in seventh grade. They wanted us to repeat sixth grade just so Sophie would have company.
A year later, Dylan, who had grown close to Sophie, transferred into our class, claiming he wanted to look after me.”
After that, the three of them kept causing trouble for me in class almost every day.
They accused me of bullying Sophie, which led to the entire class isolating me.
Great. Too bad I had no interest in playing their childish games anymore.
What a complete waste of a life.
I tilted my head, feigning confusion. “So she needs two servants just to go to school now?”
My father was so shocked he dropped his fork.
“Em–Emma, what did you just say?”
“I said, if Caleb’s so eager to play servant to her, why drag me into it?”
My mother grabbed my arm, horrified.
“Emma, what are you talking about? Serve her? Your father and I just wanted you to spend more time together, to get
closer!”
“I’m not obligated to get close to her. If someone wants to, they can knock themselves out.”
I turned to Caleb, who’d been standing there like a statue, and delivered my final verdict.
Then it’s settled. You two can attend elementary school, I’ll stay in seventh grade, and we won’t bother each other”
I turned and went upstairs, leaving everyone consoling the sobbing Sophie.
After nine o’clock that night, Caleb knocked on my door
‘Emma? You awake?”
“What?”
“Um… can you open the door?”
“No.”
Silence stretched outside for a long while.

nha que…
Just as I thought he had left. Caleb’s voice came again.
“Emma… you’re unhappy, aren’t you?”
My hands paused while I packed my things.
I frowned, replying coldly, “No.”
“You are! Emma, is this about me paying so much attention to the new sister today and ignoring you?”
I almost rolled my eyes.
I was not upset. I simply didn’t care.
Dealing with them had become so tedious it made me want to vomit.
The Emma who would spiral into depression over being ignored? She’d already died alone in Blackwood Psychiatric
Institute.
1 let out a sigh. “Seriously, Caleb, I’m fine.”
“Do whatever you want. Get close to whoever you want. I don’t care. Just leave me out of it.”
Silence fell again outside the door.
After a long pause, his voice returned, tinged with helplessness.
“Emma… Sophie’s just so pitiful. She’s this tiny little thing, so sweet and soft. I’m just so scared she’ll get hurt….
“Emma, just let me do this for one year, okay? Until she’s settled in. Then I’ll transfer schools and be with you. Promise
Fine. Whatever.
It’s not like the school isn’t basically your family’s investment. Do whatever you want.
I rolled my eyes, finished packing, popped in my earplugs, and lay down.
The next morning. I walked into the living room with my suitcase and backpack.
Everyone froze again.
I looked up and saw Dylan sitting next to Sophie.
He was my age, but already tall–strikingly so. A good half–head taller than Caleb.
The moment he saw me, he jumped up. his gentle, warm eyes curving with excitement.
“Emma! I came to take you to school!”

I lowered my gaze and noticed Sophie gripping his arm.
“You won’t need to come pick me up anymore.”
“And hey, if you want to pick someone else up instead? Be my guest.”
Dylan’s smile froze. “Why?”
I pointed to the suitcase behind me.
Chairs scraped loudly across the floor as people jumped to their feet.
Not only Dylan, but my parents and Caleb all looked bewildered.
“Emma? What’s this?”
Caleb’s bloodshot eyes fixed on my suitcase.
“Clothes, and some daily necessities.” And my jewelry, of course.
“Oh, and I forgot to mention–starting today, I’m moving to boarding school.”
“What?!” Everyone spoke at once.
My father approached with a dark expression, half–crouching to look at me.
“Emma… you’re going to boarding school?”
“Yes.”
“Why? Is it so bad at home? Did we do something to make you unhappy?”
I said nothing, my eyes betraying no emotion.
His hand rested on my hair, and I could feel it trembling slightly.
He hesitated, then glanced at Sophie.
“Is it… because of her?”
Before I could even react, Sophie bit her lip and let out this choked little sob
My mother quickly stepped forward, pulling her into her arms, and scolded my father gently.
“What are you talking about? No way. Emma, you tell me why do you want to go to boarding school? It can’t be because of Sophie. You like her, right?”
Everyone looked at me expectantly. They were waiting for me to say yes

dolva” na frente dos outros. Na cama, ela tinha que….
They wanted me to admit that I liked her and that going to boarding school was my own n of resentment.
But I had perfected the art of disappointment.
“No. I don’t like her. I hate her. And not just a little.”
“I hate Mom and Dad, I hate Caleb, I hate Dylan! I hate all of you!”
In an instant, the faces of my parents and Caleb went pale.
Dylan, however, didn’t react much.
He seemed to think I was sulking out of jealousy, his eyes full of patience and tolerance.
As I stepped past him with my suitcase, he even reached out, trying to help, but I avoided his hand.
He didn’t even flinch. Just kept following me.
My parents wanted to stop me, but Sophie’s crying interrupted them.
She sobbed even more pitifully, burying her little face in my mother’s arms, trembling all over.
“… Dad, Mom… just send me to the orphanage. Emma doesn’t like me… I don’t deserve to be at home!”
Of course, my parents comforted her gently.
Caleb, for once, was completely silent.
Dylan followed me relentlessly, forcing his way into the car I sat in.
“Go sit in your
car.”
“Why? I don’t want to! I want to be with you!”
He tilted his head, flashing those little canine teeth, completely unfazed
My fingertips trembled slightly.
I suddenly remembered–this was exactly how it had been in my previous life
When everyone else had turned on me, the only one who hadn’t taken Sophie’s side was Dylan.
When Sophie framed me for something, he stood right there with me
He had defended me when Caleb yelled at me.
When my parents‘ disappointment in me grew, he had held me gently and whispered ‘Don’t be scared, Emma. I’m here.

I’m got you.”
“If they like your sister better, that’s on them. I’ll always love you. Only you.”
I clung to him like a drowning person clutching the only lifeline, trusting him completely.
Until the day Caleb and I turned fourteen, Sophie suddenly fainted for no reason.
Dylan froze for a moment, and before anyone could react, he lunged forward and caught her steadily.
The “psychic” he’d personally brought to my party announced, for everyone to hear, that my name was bad for Sophie’s
fate.
That it was suppressing her, making her sick.
What a conveniently timed “psychic.” What a clumsy excuse.
I still remember the shock and embarrassment on the faces of relatives and friends.
Everyone could see this was a deliberate act of bullying and humiliation against me.
And my parents? They didn’t hesitate. They changed my name.
From that day on, the name I had carried for fourteen years–Emma Lancaster–became forbidden in the household
They called me… Emmeline. Emmeline. A name chosen for Sophie Hartley.
Pretty, isn’t it? But I hated it.
Until the day I died, I never liked it.
