I Stopped Loving Him When He Let Me Bleed Out novel Chapter 14

She paused, her gaze slicing through him like a blade.

"Then I suggest you watch your phrasing."

The air in the hallway felt as if it had been vacuumed out.

Director Dayton stood to the side, looking as though he had just swallowed a lemon.

Nurses and patients nearby turned their heads, exchanging shocked whispers.

Director Sawyer's face turned a mottled shade of red.

He glared at Sienna, a muscle ticking in his jaw, and then he let out a harsh laugh.

That laugh was far more menacing than his anger.

"Fine." He nodded, his voice dropping to a soft, chilling register. "Dr. Sterling. Very well. If that's how you want to play it, we will follow protocol to the letter."

He turned to Dayton.

"Director Dayton, pull all of Dr. Sterling's consultation records for the entire year. I want every single file audited."

Dayton stammered, "Director Sawyer, isn't that a bit—"

"Audit them." Sawyer cut him off, his voice absolute. "Since Dr. Sterling wants evidence, I will give her evidence."

He shot Sienna one last, venomous look.

"I hope your data is as flawless as your attitude."

With that, he turned on his heel and marched away.

His dress shoes clicked aggressively against the linoleum, the sound echoing like a ticking time bomb.

Sienna stood rooted to the spot, her spine rigidly straight.

Her expression remained defiant.

But deep inside her pockets, her hands were trembling.

At six that evening, Penny slipped into the breakroom again.

This time, she looked terrified.

"Sienna, I heard." She shut the door tightly and lowered her voice to a frantic whisper. "Medical Affairs is auditing all your records. They pulled your entire year's worth of files."

Sienna's pen paused over the chart she was updating.

"I know. Let them look."

"No, you don't understand. It gets worse!"

Sienna didn't even look up.

"What else could there be?"

Penny bit her lip, glancing at her nervously.

"They're saying you dumped Dr. Vance because you're a gold digger, and that you wanted to be some trust-fund baby's sidepiece..."

That last sentence felt like a knife plunging straight into Sienna's chest.
