'Watching a play all by yourself, Dr. Sterling?'
'A woman your age really needs to lock someone down, otherwise it's just going to get harder.'
Every venomous phrase echoed in her head, bouncing back like a slap to her own face, mocking her brutally.
She chewed hard on her lower lip.
It wasn't fair!
Finn stood there for a very, very long time.
Then he crouched down and took York from Chloe's arms.
He moved carefully, but Chloe could feel how icy his hands had become.
He gave her a look.
It was a terrifyingly dead look.
Like the surface of a frozen lake—reflecting everything, but utterly void of life underneath.
"Let's go. To the hospital," he said.
He turned and carried York toward the parking lot, getting into the car first.
Chloe stood frozen, staring at his retreating back. The streetlights stretched his shadow out against the pavement, making him look impossibly isolated.
She hurried to catch up, her heels clicking sharply against the concrete.
In the backseat of the car, Chloe held York in her lap, watching Finn's face in the rearview mirror.
She couldn't keep her mouth shut:
"Dr. Sterling really doesn't have a shortage of men, does she? This one looks so young. She's quite the operator."
Finn didn't say a word.
He just met her eyes in the rearview mirror.
That look—
Chloe had never seen him look like that before.
If looks could kill, she would have been a corpse right then and there.
"Watch the kid," he growled, his voice pitched dangerously low, every syllable vibrating with suppressed rage. "Are you even capable of being a decent mother?"
"Finn," Chloe interrupted, her voice shaking. "Do you think I did that on purpose?!"
She tightened her grip on York.
"York is my own flesh and blood. You think I wanted to hurt him? When he was choking, do you really think I wasn't the one suffering the most? And now you're sitting there blaming me—" Her voice cracked, pitching upward into a hysterical sob. "Do you just want me to die?"
"Stop using suicide as a threat."
"You're the one forcing me!" Tears streamed down Chloe's face. "The way you talk to me, you obviously want me dead!"
She began sobbing loudly, her shoulders heaving, the sound trapped and echoing in the suffocating confines of the car.
Finn didn't reply.
