Maeve's gaze swept over them like a falling leaf skimming the surface of a pond, never lingering.
She went back to tending to the kitten. The tiny creature seemed incredibly annoyed, clamping its little teeth down on Maeve's gloved finger and refusing to let go.
Maeve frowned slightly and flicked the kitten gently on the nose.
The kitten initiated a tactical retreat, its fur puffing up in absolute outrage as it arched its back, looking ready to launch a lethal counterattack.
Watching this, Finn stepped forward without thinking and gently placed his large hand over the spitting furball.
The kitten instantly froze.
It tilted its head, rubbed its fuzzy little face aggressively against Finn's fingers, and wobbly pressed itself against his forearm. It was a complete 180.
It had pale ginger fur, a chubby little face, and massive round eyes that looked like washed grapes.
The way it clung to Finn's arm was clumsy but desperately determined. Its tiny claws hooked into his sleeve, practically dangling from his wrist as it tilted its head and let out a pathetic mew.
Sienna looked over, her heart completely melting at the sight.
"I think you two are meant to be," she said with a bright smile.
The volunteer chimed in excitedly.
"Animals just know! Sir, this little guy really chose you."
Another volunteer eagerly added to the pitch.
"He was abandoned by his mother the second he was born. People saw him desperately trying to nurse, but the mother cat kept kicking him away. One of our rescues found him starving in a bush and brought him in before he froze to death."
Maeve's hands froze over her medical kit for a split second, but Sienna caught it.
Maeve slowly placed her scissors back into the box and snapped the lid shut.
Finn looked down at the tiny kitten aggressively purring against his thumb, the deep vibration rumbling against his skin.
He couldn't help but smile.
"If you like him, let's take him home," Sienna said, tilting her head to look at Finn.
Feeling the warm little body against his palm, Finn's heart softened.
"Then we'll give him a home, together."
Sienna saw the passionate resolve in his eyes.
She nodded.
"Okay."
The volunteer gently interrupted.
"Adoption requires some paperwork, and we have to do a quick screening interview." She glanced nervously toward Maeve. "You'll need to speak with our director."
