“The incident at the restaurant has been twisted by the gossip pages,” he said, his voice tight. “The news is suggesting I’m married and is accusing Kiara of being a homewrecker. You need to hold a press conference with me immediately and clarify that nothing is going on between us. Tell them it was all a misunderstanding.”
I slowly placed my glass on the table, taken aback by his hudacity. And he wasn’t finished talking.
“You also need to state that Kiara is your friend,” he continued, the entitlement dripping from his words. “Tell them you asked me to protect her that night because you were concerned for her safety.”
I stared at him, genuinely wondering if he had lost his mind. I almost thought I’d misheard him, but the demand was hanging in the air between us, shameless and unbelievable.
“Lucas,” I said, my voice dangerously low. “Have you no shame? How can you even utter such words to my face?”
Three years of marriage, I thought with a bitter pang. If hot love, couldn’t he have at least shown a shred of affection? Now I finally saw the truth with perfect clarity when a crisis struck, he would throw me away without a second thought.
“Kiara has finally become an international architect after so much difficulty,” he pleaded, his voice strained. “If this scandal sticks, it will damage her reputation and ruin her future.”
How incredibly considerate of his mistress, I thought. Not a single thought for his actual wife.
I let out a short, sharp laugh. “And you seriously expect me to help you with that?”
“What?” He looked genuinely stunned, as if the possibility of my refusal had never even crossed his mind.
“I won’t lie for you, Lucas,” I said, my voice cold and steady. “We both know the truth. It wasn’t a misunderstanding, and Kiara is certainly not my friend.”
His expression hardened, and his fingers wrapped around my arm, his grip tight. “Gia, are you deliberately trying to ruin her?!”
I ripped my arm from his grasp. “Don’t you dare blame me! It was your decision to forget you had a wife that put her in this position. This is your mess to clean up!”
“I didn’t cheat!” he insisted, his composure finally cracking. “And I didn’t betray you! Kiara and I are just friends!”
“Just friends,” I echoed, letting the pathetic phrase hang in the air between us. “Let me be clear, Lucas. I won’t do a single thing for her. If you were so worried about her precious reputation, you should have agreed to divorce me the moment your ‘friendship’ started. Right?”
“I told you,” he said through gritted teeth. “I don’t want a divorce.”
“Then you’re just greedy,” I shot back, my voice rising with indignation. “You wanted it all-the reputation of a faithful husband while keeping your mistress on the side. Isn’t that the truth?!”
With a roar of frustration, Lucas slammed his hand on the table and pointed a trembling finger at me. “Why are you doing this to me?!”
I didn’t even dignify that with a response. I simply turned and walked toward the door without a backward glance.
