“Gia! Did you block my number?! I’ve been calling you nonstop!” she shrieked. “They won’t let us in! They said we don’t have an appointment! What did you do?!”
“Yes, I blocked your number,” I said, my voice flat.
“How dare you!”
“Why wouldn’t I? Are you some sort of VIP whose calls I’m required to answer?”
Jasmine was stunned speechless.
Lucas stepped forward, his expression grim. “Our issues are between us. You shouldn’t use my mom’s illness to make things difficult.”
I let out a soft, humorless chuckle. “What, exactly, did Io?”
“You’ve accompanied my mom to every check-up. Now suddenly, you won’t. If that isn’t making things difficult, what is?” Lucas said, his voice tight with displeasure.
“So you are aware that I’ve always been th sister, not me. I never took a dime from here was a courtesy, not an obligation.”
one to bring her,” I said coldly. “Your mother raised you and your er. It is your job, and your sister’s, to be here with her. Me being
“Fine,” Lucas snapped, clearly irritated. “Even if you refuse to accompany her, why can’t my mom get an appointment? Are you telling me you had nothing to do with this?”
“Dr. James Foster is a renowned military doctor,” I explained calmly. “He’s older now and sees a very limited number of patients. You have
to schedule weeks, sometimes months, in advance, and even then, an
appointment isn’t guaranteed.”
Lucas narrowed his eyes. “Then how were you always able to get one?”
“What do you think?” I retorted.
Lucas was too stunned to speak, glaring at me with suppressed rage. I offered him a slow, pitying smile.
“Look,” I said, my voice deliberately calm. “Your mother’s cataract surgery is done. Regarding any future appointments, you’ll have to find another doctor. It will be much easier for everyone that way.”
Fatima shrieked as if I’d stabbed her. She jabbed a trembling finger at me. “You want me to see some ordinary doctor?! Are you trying to make me go blind?”
She lunged, raising a hand to slap me. I sidestepped her with ease, watching impassively as her momentum. sent her stumbling to the floor. Lucas scrambled to help his mother up.
Just then, the clinic door opened. Dr. Foster stepped out his gaze landing on the scene. “What’s going on here? Oh… Gia?”

“Dr. Foster-” I began, but immediately cut off by Fatima’s wailing.
“Doctor, this woman is pure
evil!” she cried, pointing at me again. “She’s telling me to go to some lesser doctor for my eyes! I trust only you! Thankfully, it won’t be long before my son divorces her and marries someone who is actually worthy of him!”
“Mom,” Lucas hissed, his face burning with embarrassment as he pulled at her arm. “I’ve told you, Kiara and I are just friends.”

Dr. Foster’s warm expression vanished, replaced by a glacial calm. He addressed Fatima directly. “Madam, let me be perfectly clear. The only reason I accepted you as a patient was as a favor to Gia’s parents. Since you hold their daughter in such contempt, you are no longer welcome in my clinic. Find another doctor.”
“What?!” Fatima screeched, incredulous. “Her parents are dead! What good is a favor to a couple of corpses?!”
A sharp gasp escaped my lips, but it wasn’t because of her words. A man had stepped out of the clinic behind the doctor-the very man who had been on my mind since last night. Then my eyes landed on the white bandage wrapped around Estevan Salvatore’s left forearm.
“Watch your mouth, old woman,” Estevan said, his voice dangerously low. “Do you really think it’s wise to speak of the dead that way?”

Chapter 9
Georgia’s POV
“Mr. Salvatore….” Lucas breathed, his animosity momentarily forgotten in a wave of shock.
“How dare-” Fatima began to screech, but Dr. Foster cut her off, his voice sharp and final.
“That is enough, Mrs. Sterling. Compose yourself.”

Estevan’s gaze swept over the room before it landed and locked on me. It was an intense, questioning look, as if he were reading a page of my mind. I narrowed my eyes and scowled back at him.
Dr. Foster turned his professional attention back to Fatima. “If you wish to be my patient, you will register at the front desk like everyone else. When, and if, you secure an appointment, I will see you then.” He gestured to his secretary, who promptly stepped in to escort the bewildered Sterling family away.
Lucas shot one last, conflicted look in my direction, but ignored him and turned toward the exit. I just wanted to leave. I was almost out the door when Estevan’s voice, low and right behind me, stopped me cold.
