My hand, holding the coffee cup, froze. “Are you serious?”
In my past life, I had looked into Verna’s records. She hadn’t returned to the country once in three years. No matter how much Steven threatened or cajoled, she had stayed abroad, dedicated to her medical career.
But now, she was suddenly coming back? She had just left. And Steven had just flown out to, from what I gathered, strong-arm her into coming back with him. How could she be returning now?
This wasn't how the story was supposed to go.
Or maybe, in my past life, she had planned to return but canceled at the last minute?
Jacob, beaming, placed a piece of candy on my desk. “It’s true! Why would I lie to you? We’re going to take you out to dinner to thank you for everything you’ve done for me. I hope you’ll join us.”
I looked at him, my mind in a fog. If Steven was going to be entangled with Verna on this trip, this poor kid was probably going to lose her…
Still, I nodded.
“Okay.”
In the afternoon, Myron called a meeting. Axel was hosting its triennial Emerging Designer Competition, a major platform for both established entrepreneurs and up-and-coming designers.
It was a highly prestigious event.
Anyone who made a name for themselves at this competition could catch the eye of the legendary Louis Taylor. An endorsement from him was a golden ticket to success. You might even become his final apprentice, and your career would skyrocket.
I, on the other hand, remained silent.
After the meeting, Myron asked me to stay behind.
Linda, clutching her notebook, shot me a disdainful look as she walked out. Her hostility was palpable. I had thought she had mellowed out a bit lately, but apparently, she was still the same condescending bully. It seemed my last lesson hadn’t stuck.
Once everyone had left, Myron stood up, a wide grin on his handsome face, and slid into the chair next to me.
“This design exhibition is a big deal. I heard there will be a lot of high-end designers and potential partners there. Do you need me to pull some strings for you?”
“If you submit your work under the name Somania, it will cause a huge sensation. Once you make a name for yourself, our company will get a major boost in credibility. What do you think?”
