I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 262

He’d spent the entire evening in a drinking match with Jacob, neither of them touching a bite of food. Of course he was hungry.

I held up two fingers. “Two grand. And I’ll go get you some soup.”

The hint of a smile on Steven’s lips vanished, replaced by an expression of pure disgust. “Does a day go by where you don’t try to fleece someone for money? Does it physically pain you?”

“Hmph,” I scoffed. “You broke my phone. Part of that two grand is for a replacement, and the other part is my fee for running your errands. The great CEO of Aether Studio, sick in the hospital, and personal care only costs two thousand dollars. I’d say that’s a bargain.”

Steven stared at me for a long moment. “Fine. But I want the soup you make yourself.”

I bristled. “That’ll cost extra.”

Before Steven could reply, a nurse came in to adjust his IV drip. Her eyes first landed on the pale but devastatingly handsome man in the bed, then shifted to me, slouched gracelessly in the chair. She frowned.

“You’re his wife, right? Your husband’s stomach pain is severe. Didn’t the doctor suggest you rub his stomach to ease the pain? Or at the very least, get him some light, nourishing broth? How is he supposed to get better if you just sit there?”

Her tone was accusatory, clearly siding with Steven.

Steven arched an eyebrow, his gaze fixed on me, a smirk playing on his lips.

I immediately sat up straight, my expression transforming into one of a dutiful, guilt-ridden wife. I turned to Steven, my eyes wide with remorse.

“Oh, darling, I’m so sorry. We’ve been so distant lately, you see. My husband usually spends his time with his mistress, but she’s been so exhausted recovering from childbirth. And I’ve been so busy taking care of their new baby, I just haven’t had the energy to look after him properly. I’ll massage his stomach right now, and then I’ll go buy him some soup. Then it's back home to babysit and cook for his mistress. I promise, I’ll do my best to take care of their whole family.”

Steven’s face instantly darkened. His lips parted as if to say something, but he clamped them shut.

I was busy and didn’t quite catch what he said, nor did I care to.

By the time everything was settled, it was already one in the morning. I had been running around all day and was too exhausted to even think about going home. Forgetting all about Steven, I collapsed onto the sofa and fell asleep.

I was dead to the world until a sharp pain in my fingers jolted me awake. It felt like someone was gripping my hand, trying to crush it. My eyes flew open.

To my horror, I was in Steven’s arms, tucked under the covers of his hospital bed, facing him. He was clutching my hand, our fingers intertwined, but his forehead was beaded with cold sweat and his brow was deeply furrowed. He was murmuring in his sleep, his voice agitated.

“If you dare to leave, don’t ever come back. We…”
