Gordon’s expression was priceless. He immediately turned to me.
“Ma’am, do you know him?”
I stared at the handsome man waving at me, completely baffled.
Of course I didn't know him. I would definitely remember a guy that cool and good-looking. And yet… he looked vaguely familiar.
Just then, my phone vibrated. I glanced down at a message from Uncle Julian and everything clicked. A wide smile spread across my face.
“Ryan? You’re here to take me home?”
Ryan grinned and walked over. Right in front of Steven and Gordon, he produced a huge bouquet of red roses from behind his back.
“Of course! Aren’t you happy to have a handsome guy like me pick you up? Congratulations on the divorce! Now that you’ve dumped that black-hearted scumbag, it’s all smooth sailing from here!”
Gordon’s jaw dropped.
Inside the car, Steven’s eyes turned to ice.
I was shocked, but then I laughed. I couldn't believe he brought flowers and was openly insulting Steven.
I took the bouquet. “Alright, let’s go home.”
Ryan casually slung an arm around my shoulders, leaning in close.
“You got it. If you want to go home, we go home. Though on a great day like this, I think we should go party and celebrate your freedom. But celebrating at home works too. Let’s go, get in.”
My body tensed slightly. Before I could respond, Steven’s cold voice cut in.
“Zephyra, do you actually know him? Don’t get into a stranger’s car just to spite me. You’ll be sold before you know it.”
Ryan blinked, a mysterious smile on his face. “Something that will piss him off so much he won’t be able to eat or sleep today.”
My curiosity grew, but he refused to say more. His fingers danced on the steering wheel as he whipped the car around, narrowly missing Steven’s vehicle. We quickly left them behind. He had arrived in style and was leaving the same way, driving like he was on a racetrack. Thankfully, I was holding on tight.
I didn’t know it, but after I left, Gordon scrambled back into the car, fuming. “Who does that kid think he is, talking to you like that? Does he have any idea who you are, making threats to your face?!”
Steven’s face was stormy, but his voice was calm. “Drive.”
“Oh, right.” Gordon started the car, his eyes darting to Steven in the rearview mirror. “Mr. Lancaster, he said you’d regret bullying her, that she’s not someone you can afford to mess with. What does that mean? Did her family suddenly become rich and powerful?”
Steven didn’t answer. Gordon continued, “I doubt it. If the Jones family had money, they wouldn’t be constantly asking you for help. They called my office just yesterday trying to set up a meeting with you about an investment.”
“It must be that kid. He must be rich and powerful and wants to pursue her. Look at his car, his attitude… he’s definitely loaded. He called her ‘Zephy,’ brought her a huge bouquet of roses right after her divorce… It was a blatant challenge to you, the ex-husband. I bet he wants to be her second husband—”
