“It doesn’t matter. What matters is that you’re happy with the house. Uncle Julian has plenty of money, so you can buy whatever you want.”
This sudden windfall felt too good to be true. Was I dreaming?
I felt like I was about to faint from sheer joy. This was the dream I’d had for years, and now it was actually happening!
Before I could even speak, Ryan strode in, coolly pulling off his sunglasses. He threw himself at Julian, grabbing his arm dramatically.
“Hey! You’re secretly buying my cousin a house, but what about me? I want one too!”
Julian heartlessly shoved him off. “Ask your own father.”
Ryan just huffed, then surreptitiously slipped an appointment card into my hand with a wink.
“See? He plays favorites,” he whispered conspiratorially. “Since he’s biased toward you, I’ll be biased toward you, too. Your new place isn’t decorated or furnished yet, is it? How about I take care of that for you?”
I was stunned. I had literally just met Ryan today, yet he was acting so familiar and being incredibly generous. I was completely floored.
“Oh, no, you don’t have to do that! You’re so young, you’re like a little brother to me. The furniture can wait.”
Ryan snapped his fingers, his tone playfully imperious.
“Nope. Uncle Julian got you a gift, so I have to get you one, too. Don’t worry, I just won a race and I’m loaded. It’s all prize money I earned myself, more than enough to furnish your whole place with the best of everything.”
He leaned in and added, “Think of it as a divorce gift, not a welcome-to-the-family gift. You have to accept it. It’s the only way to leave that scumbag far, far behind.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. Good things really do come all at once. The good luck just kept rolling in.
And in the span of a single morning, I’d gone from broke to loaded. The feeling was indescribable. All I could think was, if only I’d known sooner. I could have thrown a stack of cash in Steven Lancaster’s face when he called me poor and shouted, “I’m not some broke girl anymore!”
His face, if he ever found out I was rich, would be absolutely priceless.
A little while later, I made my excuses, saying I had things to do that afternoon and that Ryan should take good care of his uncle. Ryan, knowing I was headed to the doctor, didn’t try to keep me, instead resuming his playful pestering of Julian.
What a clingy kid.
Shaking my head with a smile, I followed the directions on the appointment slip he’d given me and went straight to the gynecology department. The waiting room was crowded, but the queue moved quickly. The doctor was a middle-aged woman with glasses. I briefly described my symptoms, mentioning the bleeding.
She had me lie down for an examination. When she was done, she looked at me with a frown. “There’s some hymenal tearing and a few vaginal lacerations. You… are you sure this was consensual with your boyfriend? Do you require any other assistance?”
