With that, she ignored everyone’s expressions and stormed off with the wealthy woman.
Gordon’s face screamed ‘I want to get out of here’ as he glanced timidly at Steven.
A cold frost settled over Steven’s handsome face. He frowned and looked at me.
“She doesn’t speak for me.”
“I know. Who could possibly speak for you?” If it hadn't been for Mr. Lancaster Sr. threatening his own life—oh, and Steven personally choosing me—I wouldn't have married him in the first place. Steven respected his elders’ wishes, but when it came to his own life, no one could interfere unless he allowed it.
I scoffed. “But your mother is hilarious. She talks as if I’d actually want to marry back into the Lancaster family. Even if she begged me, I wouldn’t go back.”
Ryan grinned, adding a blatant jab, “Exactly! We wouldn’t look twice at the Lancaster family. If she’s going to marry someone, it should be me. Younger guys are more fun than old men, you know.”
“…” I was starting to believe what Steven had said. Ryan probably did have a lot of female friends. How did he get so smooth at his age?
But I knew he was just trying to annoy Steven and back me up, so I didn't say anything.
Steven glanced sideways at Ryan, his calm demeanor hiding a deep, cold fury.
“Your body and soul are filthy, like a dirty rag. Unless Zephyra has started collecting trash, she wouldn’t be interested in you.”
Ryan’s cute face instantly turned as black as a pot. He seemed stunned by Steven’s venomous words. He hugged me and whimpered theatrically.
“He’s being mean to me. No one’s ever been so mean to me. You do love me, right? You’re not as heartless as he says.”
What a drama queen. But if he got into a shouting match, he probably wouldn't win against Steven. It was best to give him an out.
I frowned. “Are you lecturing me?”
His face was blank, but a deep self-mockery flickered in his eyes. “I’m reminding you that just because you divorced me doesn’t mean your standards should plummet. It makes you look like you’ve given up. And if you get with him, besides catching a disease, you’ll be tossed aside like a used rag.”
Before I could speak, Ryan exploded, his chest heaving with anger.
“I can’t stand you for another second. Every word out of your mouth is an insult to me. What am I, a bacteria? Do I spread diseases just by touching someone? Plenty of people like me, but I chose to like Zephy. Doesn't that show my intentions? Unlike a two-timing scumbag like you, I’ll treat her right for the rest of my life!”
Steven narrowed his eyes at him, his voice low and cold as it crashed down.
“Only the ignorant talk about ‘the rest of their life.’ Try engaging your brain before you speak.”
