I got out of the car, bag in hand, and went through the VIP entrance. Glancing to the side, I saw fans screaming wildly, their faces painted with colorful designs in tribute to their idols.
Horace’s fans were especially loud; I could hear their cheers clearly even from a distance.
I smiled. Horace really did have a legion of fangirls.
He was a rising star, right? Pop idols weren't supposed to have girlfriends, were they? Or if they did, they had to keep it secret, otherwise, a lot of fans would leave.
I went straight backstage and took out my phone to contact Horace, but I noticed that Rachel had called me a while ago and sent several messages. One voice message was from forty minutes ago, and the other three were more recent.
I thought she was trying to meet up with me, so I played the message.
“Zephyra, I’m still in Ixia. I have to rush to a partnership meeting and couldn't get the day off. I'm afraid I won't make it to Horace's competition today. I'll be there for his finals, though.”
So Rachel wasn't coming.
I felt a pang of disappointment as the next voice message started playing automatically.
“Zephyra, why aren't you answering your phone? I’ve called you several times. I... I went with Hugh today to discuss a partnership with your ex-husband, and I think I said something I shouldn't have.”
“I was asleep and missed your call. It’s okay, Rachel. Steven and I are divorced. It doesn't matter if he knows I used to love him. The worst that can happen is a little embarrassment. Everyone does foolish things when they’re young. It's fine. You were just telling the truth. Don’t worry about it.”
Rachel quickly sent back apologetic emojis and another voice message.
I had to reassure her several times before she finally calmed down.
I tried to calm myself down too, but by the time I reached the venue’s waiting lounge, my expression was still tense.
I didn't know why, but I felt a deep sense of unease, a foreboding premonition that something terrible was about to happen...
