A laugh escaped me. I looked at Steven's face, incredulous.
“Do you have amnesia? You don’t know who your new flame is?”
Verna wasn’t a ghost. He had taken a top medical student and turned her into his personal secretary, keeping her right under his nose. If that wasn’t love, what was?
It was even more pathetic than in my past life. At least back then, Verna was a rising star in her own field. Now, her career was likely ruined.
Though, Verna was probably thrilled.
Megan’s heart was pounding. Her expression screamed, “She’s insane.”
I could read their faces. They were all thinking that not only was I not sucking up to Steven, I was being openly hostile. If I angered him, my career in this industry would be over before it started.
But Steven didn’t get angry. He just kept his eyes fixed on me, his tone calm.
“I don’t. So tell me. If there’s a misunderstanding, I’ll correct it.”
The atmosphere at the table shifted. Everyone’s eyes darted between me and Steven, sensing that something else was going on.
I stared at him, stunned. For a moment, it was as if I didn’t know him at all.
He would correct a misunderstanding? Was this something the proud, cold Steven would ever say?
He had to be furious that I didn’t visit him and was just bottling it up, waiting for the right moment to strike.
I was so tired of him. We were divorced, but he was still stuck to me like glue.
If I couldn't beat him, I could at least run away.
Once I made my fortune and was richer than him, then I would fight him. But for now, as a newcomer, I had to be smart and protect myself.
“I’m not interested in other people’s private lives, especially yours. Do as you please,” I said, running a hand through my hair in frustration. I turned to the others. “I’m sorry, I’m not feeling well. I’m going to have to leave. We can do this again some other time.”
With that, I stood up to go. Steven didn’t move, but Zachary suddenly rushed over and blocked my path.
“Ms. Jones, that’s not right of you. It’s a rare occasion for Mr. Lancaster to join a dinner like this. And after he spoke to you so kindly, you can’t just walk out. At least have a toast with him.”
“Here, fill Ms. Jones' glass.”
Those two bastards were probably just waiting for me to beg them for help.
My gaze returned to Zachary. I weighed my options: call the police or fight back.
“If I’ve offended Steven, that’s my business. What does it have to do with you? Who asked you to step in? If you want to suck up to him, use your own merits. Do you have no shame, trying to curry favor with your precious Mr. Lancaster by putting down a stranger like me?”
Megan, seeing things were escalating, quickly stood up and tried to take the glass from Zachary’s hand. “Zachary, what are you doing? Zephyra isn’t feeling well, just let her go. I’ll drink this toast in her place.”
“Zachary, Zephyra is Mr. Taylor’s prized student, a future star in the jewelry design world. She’s a top talent! If she gets sick from drinking now, it could affect her performance in the competition.”
Zachary’s face hardened. This was likely the first time he had encountered someone as defiant as me, and he refused to back down.
“I don’t care about Mr. Taylor or Mr. Lee. She’s just a designer. Since she offended Mr. Lancaster, she has to drink!”
Megan was exasperated but didn’t dare to truly offend him. She looked at me tentatively. “Zephyra, maybe just drink one? I’ll take you back to your room afterward.”
I took the glass from Zachary’s hand. A smile finally spread across his face. “There we go. Young people need to know their place to have a future. Now, toast Mr. Lancaster properly. Don’t waste the chance I’ve given you to apologize.”
