He dialed the number, but no one answered. Then he called Myron to get an update.
Myron's voice was dripping with sarcasm. "She didn't come to see you? Well, Steven, you really need to take a long, hard look at yourself. I said everything I could, praised you to the high heavens, laid your heart bare for her to see. But you know what a woman needs? A sense of security."
"Tell me, with such a golden opportunity to be the hero, why did you save Verna first? When it was a matter of life and death, you chose Verna. So why don't you just be with her!"
"Do you have any idea what Horace did? The second Horace saw her fall in the water, he jumped right in! And you! I didn't dare say a word about Horace to her, because I was afraid the comparison would be too stark, that she'd be too disappointed in you!"
Steven's handsome face was icy.
"I didn't know she was going to fall in. Mr. Wilson would never have thrown her into the sea. If Horace jumped in to save her immediately, why did I still have to be the one to rescue her in the end? And what were you doing?"
Myron's voice faltered. "My guys jumped in to get her right away too! But we were a little far from you, so we were a bit slow. And Horace is useless. He jumped in and just started sinking. So my guys had to save him first."
"Then I saw you get on the speedboat. At that point, a few things were clear: one, you were closer, and two, if you weren't the one to personally save her, you two would probably never have a chance. But even with the life-debt bonus, she still didn't come to see you. You were hoping she'd come back to you willingly? Ha, is that even possible?"
Steven's face was grim.
...
Horace was in the psychiatric ward. Seeing those words made my heart sink. I frowned and walked toward his room, but the sound of his agent's angry questioning stopped me at the door.
"What on earth are you doing? There were so many people there to rescue Zephyra, what were you joining in for? You even jumped into the sea! You jumped in and then just sank like a stone! Your leg isn't even healed yet. Even if someone had to save her, it wouldn't have been you! If Mr. Taylor's men hadn't pulled you out, you wouldn't have made it back, you know that?"
"And you have post-traumatic stress disorder! You must have nearly drowned before. Didn't you feel it when you got on the boat? You pushed through it the whole way just to find her. She has Mr. Lancaster to save her, but who do you have? This is serious, it could have killed you, you know that?!"
