Bullshit. If he had liked me for a long time, would he have let me get hurt and bullied me like that?
I curled my lip into a sneer.
“Your kind of love is bizarre. We believe in being devoted to one person, in easing their burdens. It’s nothing like your fickle version, which seems to specialize in causing trouble for the one you supposedly love.”
Steven’s expression stiffened as if my words had struck a nerve. When he tied off the bandage on my knee, he pulled the knot a little too tight, making me grimace in pain.
I glared at him. He just looked at me and said, “You have clothes in the master bedroom. Go upstairs and change.”
I scoffed and took the elevator upstairs to change. I’m not a neat freak, but I couldn’t stand being covered in mud.
By the time I came back down, Gordon had arrived. He looked utterly shocked, as if he’d seen a ghost.
When he saw me, he rushed over. “Mrs. Lancaster, was your house robbed?”
I glanced around. A trail of muddy footprints marred the floor, leading all the way to the elevator. The sofa was smeared with dirt from where I’d sat.
I said without batting an eye, “Your boss did it. It has nothing to do with me.”
Gordon clearly didn’t believe me. “Mr. Lancaster’s mysophobia is cured?”
I ignored him and seized the opportunity. “Don’t you think he’s changed a lot since his car accident? You’re always with him. Have you noticed how different he is?”
Gordon sighed. “I’m not really his advocate. He truly has changed. The first thing he wanted when he woke up from the accident was to see you. There were so many people by his bedside, and he sent them all away. I’d never seen him so frantic, so broken. He only wanted to see you, he had to see you, but the hospital wouldn’t discharge him, and Mr. Lancaster Sr. refused to approve it. So he called you. But after you said hello, he didn’t say anything. I think I know what he was thinking. He was probably afraid you wouldn’t talk to him if you recognized his voice.”
“I’ve known Mr. Lancaster for years, and I truly felt he was pitiful at that moment. And this time, with the kidnapping, he rushed over as soon as he heard the news. When you fell into the sea, he was the one who saved you. I know you must think he’s a womanizer since he saved two women, but I was right there with him. I saw how genuinely worried he was about you.”
“I can’t speak to your relationship in the past, but his feelings for you now are absolutely sincere. It’s just like you—you suddenly stopped loving him overnight, which was bewildering. Mr. Lancaster suddenly started loving you deeply overnight, and that feels just as undeniable.”
I had been tuning him out, but Gordon’s last sentence made my mind go completely blank with a deafening buzz.
My pupils dilated as I stared at him. “Steven fell deeply in love with me… overnight?”
Gordon said, “Maybe my wording is a little off, but Mr. Lancaster did change so much overnight. Just like you did. You changed a lot in every way.”
