The next day, it was overcast in Baxo.
Julian had gone abroad for a competition, and Leonard was still overseas. I called him, but it was his secretary who answered.
I frowned. “Where is my brother?”
The secretary replied, “Don’t worry, Miss. Mr. Lopez is fine. He’s in an online meeting right now and can’t take your call. Is there anything urgent? I can pass on a message.”
“It’s nothing major,” I said, “I just wanted to ask about my brother’s case. How is it progressing?”
The secretary answered frankly, “Mr. Lopez’s case involves the company’s image. The lawsuit itself isn’t tricky, but the evidence-gathering process is difficult and will take time. So, Mr. Lopez won’t be able to return to the country for a while, unless the other party is willing to settle.”
Monica’s false accusation against my brother was instigated by Steven. If they wanted to settle, Steven would likely have to approve it.
I was not going to beg Steven again. In any case, my brother was out on bail, so I’d let him handle it himself.
After a few simple instructions and mentioning that I would be going abroad for a while, I hung up.
Just then, I heard footsteps approaching from behind. I thought it was my grandfather and my heart clenched for a moment—the old man shouldn't know about my brother’s situation. I quickly hid my phone and turned around with a smile.
“Grandpa…”
Before the word was fully out, I froze, staring at the tall, handsome, and gentle man before me. My hands instinctively tightened on the hem of my clothes.
He looked at me with his usual calm expression, his dark eyes holding a hint of a smile.
“Why do you look like you're facing an enemy? Not happy to see me?”
I took a deep breath and forced a smile.
“Don’t be silly. I’m just surprised you’re here so early. Please, sit.”
I didn't deny it. I looked at him steadily, my eyes filled with guilt and complexity.
“I apologize for my previous words and actions. Even if Steven and I get a divorce, I won’t marry you. I can’t spend the rest of my life with you burdened by guilt. It’s not fair to you, or to me. Love should be passionate, and marriage is about mutual need. I can’t offer you either. Marrying you would only be hurting you.”
Horace didn't rush to speak. He picked up the glass of water and took a sip, his refined features lowered. When he spoke again, his deep voice carried a faint chill.
“Isn't Steven in jail? Is he still threatening you?”
“Steven did use you to threaten me before, but this has nothing to do with him. These are my true feelings.”
I tried to choose my words carefully, then gave a bitter smile. “I know this is hurtful, and I’ll understand if you want to go our separate ways. But we can’t continue this mistake. I’m not right for you, and I don’t deserve you…”
“What do you mean, you don't deserve me? Do I care that you had a marriage with Steven? Don’t underestimate my feelings for you. Forget just sleeping with him, even if you were carrying Steven’s child, I would still want you.” He refused to listen further, his eyes fixed on me as he gripped my hand tightly. “Zephyra… I’m begging you, don’t be so cruel, please?”
ps: More to come~
