A tremor went through Steven. The light in his deep eyes seemed to shatter into a million pieces. He was furious, enraged, but an overwhelming, subconscious dread was creeping up from his core, making his knuckles tighten until they were white.
“I'm going to Hoa Bridge. Take care of my grandfather.”
Gordon was horrified. “Sir, you can't! This is an internal meeting with the board and senior executives specifically about you. If you're absent, you'll be handing Thomas an opportunity on a silver platter. It will only create more problems for you to solve... Sir!”
Steven rushed out without a word.
Gordon was frantic. Didn't Steven just say he wanted nothing to do with her? Why was he so worried now that he couldn't reach her?
Wasn't the board meeting more urgent? Even if she ran away, he could always find her!
Grumbling to himself, he was about to call Mr. Winters when a news alert popped up on his phone.
Gordon's eyes widened in shock as he watched a dashcam video that had gone viral. It showed several cars plummeting as the bridge collapsed. One of them was sickeningly familiar.
It was Steven's car, with a bodyguard at the wheel.
Goosebumps erupted all over his skin. He couldn't believe it. “If... if she was in that car, then she went down with it.”
In a fall like that, he feared, there would be no survivors.
At the company headquarters.
A group of executives waited in the boardroom.
Mr. Lee glanced at his phone, a smirk spreading across his face. He looked up. “It's time.”
He looked at the old guard in the room, tapping his fingers on the table.
“I told you. Mr. Lancaster has been brought down by a woman. His head is so full of emotions, he's forgotten about business. He knows how crucial this meeting is, yet he can't even be bothered to show up. It's clear he has no respect for any of us.”
“If you ask me, this company is doomed if it stays in his hands.”
The room was filled with disgruntled faces. Even Mr. Winters and his supporters had nothing to say.
On the other end of the line, Horace was sitting in the reception room of the Brooks family's company. His expression was placid, but his eyes were sharp and cold.
“Congratulations, Thomas. Cream always rises to the top. Your efforts are paying off. I'm a bit tied up today, but let's schedule something soon.”
“Sure thing,” Thomas said cheerfully. “By the way, you didn't have anything to do with my old man's... situation, did you?”
Horace laughed lightly. “Careful what you say, Thomas. The wrong person might overhear and cause trouble for both of us.”
Thomas said, “Alright, I'll drop it. And don't worry. The old man only ever cared about Steven. I don't give a damn whether he lives or dies.”
“But there's something I've been dying to ask you. Not many people dare to go up against Steven. Are you really only in this partnership for the money?”
Horace's long fingers toyed with his phone, his eyes darkening. Before he could answer, Thomas blurted out, unable to contain himself.
“It's about Zephyra, isn't it? I saw your debut video. You confessed your love to her, right? And now she's back with Steven. That must piss you off.”
“I get it. The one that got away. Zephyra is definitely a looker, great body too. But she's more trouble than she's worth—a real maneater, and she gets around. What's so special about her?”
