Thomas said contemptuously, “How could he possibly be okay? Zephyra’s body is still missing—for all we know, she was eaten by fish. He’s completely devastated. If you ask me, Steven is a hopeless case. After Zephyra scammed him out of a fortune and he lost two major projects, he still hasn’t learned his lesson. The board is furious.”
“Now that I’ve taken his position, there’s no way I’ll make the same mistakes. But he did hit me. So, for old times' sake, if Steven gets on his knees and apologizes, I’ll forgive him. I’ll even cover his living expenses for the rest of his life.”
“Verna, stick with me, and you’ll live a life of luxury.”
Verna’s expression was complicated as she looked at Thomas’s overconfident face. Just as she was about to speak, a cold, serious voice cut through the air.
“Mr. Thomas Lancaster, I suggest you watch your words. You’re not in charge of this company just yet.”
Thomas’s face soured the moment he saw Gordon. He shoved his hands in his pockets.
“You’re Steven’s assistant, but you also work for the company. You’re always running off somewhere, your attendance is a mess. Who approved that? I’m firing you right now. Get out!”
The crowd of gossiping colleagues, who had been pretending to work, finally made a noise.
They were shocked.
Mr. Thomas Lancaster had the audacity to fire Gordon? That was a direct slap in the face to Mr. Lancaster!
Gordon said, “Mr. Thomas Lancaster, to fire me, you need Mr. Lancaster’s approval, a valid reason for termination, and the corresponding severance pay. If you follow the proper procedure, I will leave.”
Thomas had been suppressed by Steven for over twenty years. Now that he finally had some power, he expected everyone to bow down to him. He couldn’t believe Gordon was talking back.
His anger flared, and he suddenly raised his hand and slapped Gordon across the face.
The sound was crisp and loud.
The crowd started typing even faster, their keyboards clattering away.
Verna’s eyes widened. A bright red handprint was already forming on Gordon’s cheek.
Thomas loosened his tie.
Thomas had been afraid of him since childhood. His bravado deflated, and he had to force his expression to remain firm to avoid crumbling. Caught between being cowardly and arrogant, he chose to play dumb with a smirk.
“What kind of person do you think I am? You’re my dear cousin, I couldn’t adore you more. I was just joking with Gordon.”
Steven walked into his office and sat down calmly.
“I never authorized you to enter this company. That’s your first mistake. You assaulted Gordon. That’s your second. The severance for the receptionist and Gordon’s hospital bills will be deducted from your account. If that’s not enough, I’ll deduct it from your mother’s.”
He then looked at Gordon. “Take two days of paid leave to rest. Report this to the police and file for compensation. Don’t let yourself be taken advantage of.”
Gordon’s spirits lifted instantly. “Yes, Mr. Lancaster.”
Thomas, who had followed them in, flared up at his words.
“What do you mean? You’re the one who made all these messes. I haven’t even come after you for them, and now you’re telling him to call the cops on me? Steven, are you even Steven anymore? Are you just trying to bring me down because you see I’m doing better than you?!”
