I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 688

The phone was on speaker. I instinctively glanced at Steven. His handsome face was expressionless, but his eyes flickered toward me with a meaningful look.

I gave an awkward smile. I knew Steven and I hadn't gotten along in the past, but I didn't realize even my mentor knew about it. Just how bad had our relationship been?

Before I could speak, Steven took the phone from me. He briefly explained my amnesia, got Mr. Taylor’s address, and said he would arrange for someone to pick him up and bring him here to talk with me.

Then he hung up.

I peeked at him. “So... did Mr. Taylor say anything else?”

“Nothing important. You two can talk when he gets here,” Steven said, handing the phone back. He pulled me onto his lap, his arm tightening around my waist as he spoke in a low, displeased tone. “A bastard? It seems you used to curse me out quite a bit.”

I smiled appeasingly. “That’s all in the past. Besides, maybe you deserved it back then.”

His grip on my waist tightened slightly, but he didn't argue. He stared at me intently for a moment before leaning in to kiss my cheek, his lips then moving to claim mine in a possessive kiss.

In my limited understanding, I had assumed that in a relationship with a calm, aloof man like Steven, I would be the one who was clingy and needy.

But it turned out his cool, disciplined demeanor was just a facade. Underneath, he was completely unrestrained, forceful and domineering. He kissed me whenever he wanted, and I had no choice in the matter.

If he weren't still injured, he probably would have had me in bed countless times by now.

For a man who valued his reputation so much, how did he get by when I wasn't around?

In the afternoon, Gordon brought a team of specialists over. They examined me one by one, and I was full of hope. Back in the fishing village, Steven had told me these experts were the best and would definitely help me with my amnesia.

But after a series of tests and blood work, even an abdominal exam, the specialists concluded that while there was a chance my memory could return, it was slim. Furthermore, because the injury was in my brain, they advised against any invasive procedures.
