I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 726

Verna's eyes widened in shock. She struggled, trying to get to her feet.

"Mr. Lancaster, you can take everything back, but you can't humiliate me like this! I'm a doctor. How can you ask me to be a janitor?!"

I found it amusing. Verna seemed to have forgotten that if it weren't for Steven's financial support over the years, she would have dropped out of school long ago. How would she ever have had the chance to become a doctor?

Besides, if she really had the pride she claimed, she would have made her own way instead of obsessing over some twisted rivalry and constantly asking Steven for money.

My first impression of her had been decent, but now I only saw her as selfish, hypocritical, and utterly contemptible.

A cold glint appeared in Steven's eyes. "If others can do it, why can't you?"

He sneered. "Oh, I see. You just have a self-righteous 'pride' that others don't."

Hearing this, I raised an eyebrow, more amused than surprised, ready to watch the show.

I never thought I'd see the day Steven directed his cruelty at Verna. Clearly, her curse on our unborn child had thoroughly enraged him.

I thought to myself, *Keep it up. Let Verna get a good look at the kind of man she's so obsessed with.*

Publicly humiliated, Verna was both ashamed and furious. Her eyes reddened, but with her face swollen, her tears lost any trace of delicate beauty and failed to evoke an ounce of pity from anyone.

In the end, Verna chose to surrender. Her voice trembled as she said, "Mr. Lancaster, I was wrong. I promise I won't go after her again. Please, just let me go this time…"

This scene took me by surprise. So, Verna did know how to bow her head.

Then again, with a billion dollars on the line, it was enough to make anyone swallow their pride.

Steven ignored Verna completely and turned to Thomas. "Calculate her salary based on a regular employee's wage. She's free to go when the debt is paid off. Understand?"

Thomas froze for a moment, then nodded frantically. "Don't worry, I'll do exactly as you say."

Then, Steven's gaze shifted to me, his expression instantly softening. "Zephyra needs to rest."

"Right, I get it," Thomas quickly agreed. He grabbed Verna, clamped a hand over her mouth despite her struggles, and half-dragged, half-carried her out of the room.

The large man stood by, bowing even lower, awaiting Steven's orders.

Steven looked at me with gentle eyes, a clear smile on his face. "Didn't you ask me to choose?"

I paused, then it clicked. I remembered asking him if he was willing to stand against Verna for my sake. It turned out he had already answered with his actions.

He suddenly leaned down, placing his hands on the armrests of my chair, trapping me in the small space. His stunningly handsome face loomed closer, his eyes sparkling.

"You're my wife. How could an insignificant person like her ever compare to you!"

A faint, woody scent wafted over. While I was still dazed, he gently pressed a kiss to my forehead.

"Zephyra, you only need to remember one thing. No matter how many lifetimes we have, my choice will always be you."

His voice was gentle, but it made my heart tremble.

I pushed him away abruptly, my cheeks flushing slightly. I feigned composure and said, "Stay away from me. Save those sweet words for someone else."

Steven just smiled. "Alright. I'll go get us some food. You be good and wait for me."
