I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 729

When Steven returned from his call, he took me to see the doctor. He was a man in his sixties with a grumpy demeanor, reminding me of a stubborn but authoritative elderly relative.

To be honest, I was always a little intimidated by him.

"Don't worry, I called ahead. We can go straight to the tests."

Steven whispered reassuringly, as if he could read my mind.

Unexpectedly, the old doctor's face darkened the moment he saw us.

"Coming for a check-up right after eating? You young people have no common sense!"

He slapped the appointment card on his desk as he spoke, acting as if we had deliberately come to challenge his authority.

"You're about to be parents, and you're still so careless. Spend less time on your phones and more time reading a book. Learn something!"

The old doctor lectured us for several minutes. Steven stood behind me, smiling apologetically and nodding in agreement.

Seeing his cheerful expression, and considering his past behavior, I seriously suspected he was doing this on purpose just to keep me from being discharged.

"Doctor, can I be discharged first and come back for the tests later?"

The old doctor glared at me. "No! Don't think I don't know how you young people think. 'Later' always means 'never.' We'll talk after you finish the tests tomorrow!"

Defeated, I had no choice but to agree.

Steven, standing beside me, couldn't hide the smile in his voice. "Honey, we have to listen to the doctor. They're the experts, after all."

Steven looked at me, his expression unreadable. "I told you, I will never hurt you. From now on, I will only protect you."

His voice was soft, but every word carried weight.

I couldn't be bothered to argue with him. I turned and went back to my room, and he followed close behind.

The next day, at the crack of dawn, I was already urging Steven to take me for the tests.

Even though the nurse had said the baby was healthy, I wanted a doctor's professional opinion before I left. After all, the baby's health was more important than anything.

The public hospital was far more crowded than a private one. The hallways, the lobby—everywhere was packed with people, especially the OB-GYN department. There wasn't even a place to sit.

Steven wanted to take me to a private hospital, but I refused. Partly because I didn't want the hassle, and partly because I worried he was plotting something. If he took me back to his house, it would be difficult for me to leave.
