When it came to being shameless, no one could beat Steven.
I scoffed. “Don't flatter yourself. Someone kept calling and interrupting my show. I was just trying to figure out how to shut it up.”
He just smiled at my words without saying anything. He held out his hand, and I passed the phone to him, secretly regretting that I hadn't gotten the chance to see what Verna had sent.
But to my surprise, Steven didn't take it. Instead, his well-defined fingers tapped the screen a few times, and the phone unlocked.
I stared for a second, looking at him in confusion.
Steven's lips curved slightly. “Look at whatever you want. I have no secrets on my phone.”
Looking at his confident expression, I found it amusing. The damn man had no idea it was Verna trying to contact him. If he knew, he probably would have jumped up and snatched the phone back.
I shifted slightly and opened the messages.
Verna had sent four or five messages, each one as long as a short essay.
Afraid Steven would notice, I quickly started reading from the first one.
The very first message shocked me. Verna, who was always so arrogant and acted superior to everyone, was repeatedly apologizing to Steven, saying she had a moment of foolishness and begging him to let her off the hook and help her contact a doctor abroad.
It was the first time I'd ever seen her so humble. But I had a feeling this was the real Verna. Her usual arrogance was just a facade; deep down, she was timid and weak.
Just as I was lost in thought, a small spoon filled with milky-white fish soup appeared at my lips.
In the next few messages, Verna's tone gradually shifted from pleading to threatening, and I easily picked out the keywords.
“[Steven, you know perfectly well that I'm the main character and Zephyra is just a side character, a bad omen. If you keep getting entangled with her, things won't end well for anyone.]”
I sneered. Verna was truly incorrigible, always trying to brainwash people.
I studied the messages carefully, trying to find more clues. The phrases “what you did behind my back” and “your fate is sealed” made my heart clench.
But after mulling it over for a long time, I couldn't find anything substantial. I was a little disappointed. Why did Verna always have to speak in riddles? Couldn't she just be direct?
What exactly did Steven do behind Verna's back? And what was this sealed fate she was talking about?
