I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 806

“How did you know?” I asked, surprised.

“Mr. Lancaster came by several times this afternoon, asking to see you,” Tess said nonchalantly. “But Mr. Lopez refused and had the butler turn him away.”

“So Mr. Lancaster has been waiting at the gate ever since, saying he won't leave until he sees you. But from what I can tell, Mr. Lopez has no intention of letting him in.”

“…”

So, he’s been waiting all afternoon!

A mix of emotions churned inside me. I was already feeling guilty for misjudging him, and now, hearing this, the feeling intensified into something I couldn't quite name.

“Oh, and Gordon mentioned this afternoon that Mr. Lancaster caught a cold this morning,” Tess added casually. “This rain isn't letting up anytime soon. If he stays out there, he's definitely going to run a fever!”

As she spoke, Tess peeked out the window. “Gordon also said Mr. Lancaster's hand is injured. Soaking in the rain like that… it could get infected, right?”

Her words made me freeze, and the spoon slipped from my grasp, clattering into the bowl.

An image of Steven's blood-stained hand flashed through my mind.

Steven was never one to be stubborn like this. He must be doing this because of the harsh things I said this morning. He probably thinks I'm still furious and feels he has to see me.

The soup in my mouth suddenly tasted like plain water, completely flavorless.

I glanced at Tess. “Tess, go out there and tell Steven to go home.”

Tess looked at me, a flicker of confusion in her eyes, but she nodded and went.

I stood by the window, watching Tess talk to Steven under an umbrella. A few minutes later, she returned, slightly out of breath.

Tess mused, “I suppose you're right. It's a foolish tactic on his part. This kind of emotional blackmail only works on people who care about him. Since you don't like Mr. Lancaster, you wouldn't be bothered at all.”

Her words made me freeze.

It was as if Tess's comment had jolted me awake. This kind of thing only works on someone who cares. And my current agitation… it was because I cared about Steven!

I fell into thought. I remembered how, in the past, I would have gloated at his misfortune, maybe even popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate.

But somewhere along the line, that had changed. I had started to worry about him getting hurt, to seriously consider his words, and to subconsciously defend him.

My state of mind now wasn't so different from when I had amnesia!

Had I… started to fall for Steven all over again?
