I put my phone down and got ready for bed. A small nightlight was on in the room, casting a soft glow that was easy on the eyes but still bright enough to make out the furniture.
I frowned slightly in the direction of the window, then turned over and closed my eyes to sleep.
In that state between sleep and wakefulness, I heard the wail of an ambulance. Suddenly, I was in a hospital corridor. Doctors and nurses rushed a gurney toward the emergency room. I caught a glimpse of the patient—it was Steven, covered in blood, lying motionless.
I tried to follow them in, but a doctor stopped me. I could only watch helplessly as the emergency room doors swung shut. Trembling, I sank into a chair in the waiting area.
I don't know how much time passed before the doctor emerged and simply shook his head at me.
I stared at the ER doors in disbelief before my body went limp and I collapsed to the floor. “No, it can't be… Steven! Steven!”
I shot up in bed with a gasp, realizing I was still in my room. Slowly, my panic began to subside.
The nightmare had felt so real. For a moment, I had truly felt a sharp pain in my heart, and now I was drenched in a cold sweat.
A flash of lightning lit up the sky outside, and I instinctively looked toward the window. The image of Steven, bloody and lifeless from my dream, resurfaced in my mind.
I grabbed my phone and checked the time. It was almost 11 PM. More than three hours had passed; surely he'd gone home by now.
The sound of the rain had stopped. I got out of bed, wanting to open the window for some fresh air.
But as soon as I pulled back the curtain, I saw him. He was still standing there, in the exact same spot.
I froze for a second, then a fresh wave of anger washed over me. Did he think he was invincible?
I pressed my lips together, grabbed a coat, and headed downstairs, where I immediately ran into the butler carrying a glass of milk.
I hadn't even reached the main gate when Steven spotted me and hurried over. By the time I opened it, he was standing right in front of me.
He was soaked through, with droplets of water clinging to his long eyelashes. His dark, obsidian eyes were fixed on me.
I looked at him impatiently. “What exactly do you want?”
Steven frowned slightly, his voice hoarse. “Zephyra, come back with me. I promise I'll take good care of you. I'm not comfortable with you being here.”
I was speechless. “Steven, get a grip. This is my uncle's house. What's there to be uncomfortable about?”
Steven's tone was even. “I don't mistrust Uncle Julian. I mistrust you. Who knows if you'll sneak off behind my back and run off to another country with Horace…”
