I added plenty of honey to the ginger tea to mellow out the spice, hoping it would be palatable.
Steven's gaze was intense as he stared at me. I guiltily looked away, but my heart was pounding uncontrollably.
Neither of us said a word, yet the atmosphere grew strangely delicate.
I could feel my cheeks growing warm. "I'm going to sleep," I announced. "Turn off the light when you're done!"
With that, I quickly slipped into bed and turned my back to him. I was being so strange today—or rather, I'd been strange lately. It felt like I was losing control of my own heart, always doing things that just frustrated me.
I knew I didn't have to take care of Steven, yet every time, I couldn't help myself. I used to be head over heels for him, so I knew exactly what this kind of behavior meant.
Just as I was lost in thought, the room plunged into darkness. Steven had turned off the light.
Then, an arm tightened around my waist as Steven pressed against me, pulling me into a tight embrace.
I could barely move, and a wave of irritation washed over me. I tried to pry his arm off, but he wouldn't budge.
"Let me go. Give me some space."
Instead, he held me even tighter. His body was so warm and comfortable that a part of me wanted to stay there just a little longer.
"No, Zephyra. You won't leave me, will you?" His voice was laced with anxiety.
I wondered if seeing Horace today had made him so worried about this.
I was taken aback. What did he mean, he had no choice?
I couldn't make sense of it, but he continued, "I never wanted to see you hurt. When you were sad, my heart ached too. I would have rather taken on all the pain for you."
His voice was as soft as a whisper. "I love you... I only love you..."
My face turned crimson, but I also found it strange. Steven had expressed his love before, but never so openly or with so many words.
Even more incredibly, he was bringing up our past life on his own. Before, no matter how I pressed him, he would always evade the topic or just brush it off.
Steven was acting so strangely tonight...
