Tess perched on the arm of the sofa, holding a photo of me and staring at it intently. “Ma’am, look at this picture. Your smile is so sweet.”
At that time, my heart and soul were filled with the thought of spending the rest of my life with Steven; the love was practically spilling from my eyes.
I didn’t say anything, just handed the photo frame back to her.
Tess took it and continued to praise me, but my mind was a tangled mess, and I couldn't register a word she was saying. A strange sense of panic even began to rise within me.
Soon, footsteps echoed from outside the door. I looked up to see Steven striding in.
His eyes curved into a smile when he saw me, and his tone was gentle. “Zephyra, what are you doing here? I had Gordon go get you something you like to eat.”
Just as he finished, Gordon peeked his head in from the doorway.
I looked up at him, my face devoid of expression. “No, thank you. I don't want to eat anything.”
Right now, all I cared about was whether Horace was telling the truth.
Steven didn't seem to notice anything was wrong and sat down next to me, reaching out to hug me. I sidestepped his embrace.
I shifted away, creating a person’s width of distance between us.
Although I hadn’t agreed to remarry him, we had grown quite close these past few days. Hugs and kisses were commonplace.
My sudden move left him looking puzzled and hurt. “What’s wrong? Who upset you?”
My face was cold, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop a few degrees with my mood. Gordon quickly gestured for Tess to leave, making sure to close the door behind them.
I turned to face Steven directly, studying him with a serious expression. My voice was calm and icy. “I need to ask you something, and you have to tell me the truth. You can't lie to me.”
This was completely different. I didn't want to dwell on the past, but that didn’t mean I didn’t want to know the truth.
In my previous life, if Queena hadn’t come to me, I never would have lost my child, and none of the subsequent events would have happened.
Queena was the root of all this trouble. But if she was deliberately led to me, then I had to unmask the mastermind behind it all.
Before I could speak again, Steven moved closer, reaching for me. “Zephyra, let’s just let it go. You’re almost four months along now. The most important thing is to take care of yourself and the baby.”
I stared at him expressionlessly. He was acting too strange today. Normally, he would have been furious in a situation like this, but today he wasn't angry at all; instead, he was just dodging the question.
His unusual behavior sent a chill through my heart, and my voice grew urgent. “Don’t change the subject. I’m asking you, did you send Queena to find me? Answer me!”
I practically shouted the last words, my body trembling slightly.
