Rachel grabbed my hand, her voice filled with emotion.
"Zephyra, I'm serious. I'm begging you. Since you won't be with Horace, then just stay far away from him. At least don't bring him your bad luck."
Hearing that, my expression darkened, and I forcefully shook her hand off.
"Rachel, I thought you'd come to your senses, but you're still delusional. Let's just pretend we don't know each other from now on."
With that, I got up and moved to a corner far away from her.
Rachel sat on the floor, tears streaming down her face.
"I just want Horace to be okay. In a situation like this, I can't think of anything else. It's a long shot, but we have to try something."
"I don't want it to be like this either, but what Verna said sounded so real... I just thought, we should at least try it. What if it works?"
I remained silent. Logically, I could understand Rachel's desperation and her reasoning, but emotionally, I couldn't accept it.
We used to be such good friends, we'd been through so much together. But now she didn't trust me, choosing instead to side with others and hurt me again and again.
Horace was innocent, but wasn't I innocent too?
I had wanted to salvage our friendship, but now it seemed pointless.
Without our phones, time seemed to slow to a crawl.
We could hear the men talking outside, their conversation laced with profanity and slang. They were shamelessly commenting on us, from our clothes to our bodies.
Rachel heard them and flew into a rage, getting up to rush the door. I immediately stood up and blocked her way, my face like ice. "What are you doing?"
"Go on, open it. If they decide to do something to you, I can't save you. They'll be just like those attackers you see on TV, tearing at your clothes, staring at you with those disgusting looks... and the more you scream, the more excited they'll get..."
Before I could finish, Rachel snatched her hand back and retreated several steps.
I half-joked, "When you're a hostage, you need to act like one. The fact they haven't hurt me yet means they want something. And if they want something, we have room to negotiate. Just be patient and we'll play it by ear."
As I saw it, as long as we could negotiate, our chances of survival were high. Otherwise, it would have been much easier for them to just drive the car into a river.
Rachel shot me a glare and went to squat in a corner.
I leaned against the wall to get some sleep. Rachel snapped, "Sleep, sleep, sleep, that's all you do. You've been sleeping all day, aren't you tired of it?"
Without even opening my eyes, I said meaningfully, "I'm sleeping while I can. We might not get the chance tonight."
