I knew perfectly well that no one could survive two stab wounds without being hurt. But in that moment, my mind went completely blank. I had no idea what to do.
Steven started to collapse, unable to support his own weight, and I used all my strength to hold him up.
His head slumped onto my shoulder as he murmured something I couldn't understand.
Beside us, Gordon was on the phone, frantically calling for an ambulance. “Ma’am, don’t let Mr. Lancaster pass out!” he urged me.
My voice trembled. “Steven, what did you say? I couldn’t hear you. Say it again.”
His breathing grew ragged, and he struggled to speak. “Can you… forgive me one more time?”
This time I heard him, but I didn’t know how to answer. In the past, I would have said anything, lied without a second thought, but I couldn’t do that anymore.
Now, I took every word he said to heart.
As I hesitated, I felt the weight on my shoulder grow heavier. I cried out in panic, “Steven! Steven, wake up!”
He was completely limp, and I was losing my grip. Thankfully, Gordon ended his call and rushed over to help.
Rachel knelt and helped me support Steven, keeping him from slumping to the floor.
I looked down at my hands and saw they were covered in blood. The sticky, warm feeling sent a jolt of terror through me. The floor beneath us was a horrifying pool of red.
I sighed. “You have it. I don’t have an appetite.”
She pressed it into my hand anyway. “If you don’t eat now, how are you going to take care of him when he gets out? Don’t look at me. I’m already doing well not to punch him.”
I forced myself to take a bite, but the food felt like sawdust in my mouth. Rachel handed me a bottle of water. “Everything’s better now that we’re out of there.”
I said nothing, listening to her quietly. She finished her sandwich, while mine remained almost untouched.
She glanced toward the emergency room doors. “I always thought Steven was just using you, but now I see I was wrong. Taking a knife for you… that means he really loves you.”
“He might not be a good person in a lot of ways, but his love for you is real.”
