Finnegan kept the plans they discussed at the main estate a secret from Seraphina. Her emotions were far too volatile lately, and telling her would only send her spiraling further.
"Yeah, we were discussing wedding plans," he finally said.
Seraphina's eyes sparkled as she looked at him. "So what did Grandpa say? When are we doing the engagement shoot? When are we signing the papers? Is the date set?"
Seraphina couldn't wait any longer. If she didn't marry Finnegan soon, she was genuinely terrified Nora would use some underhanded trick to steal him away.
She had waited for so many years; she couldn't afford to wait another second.
"Seraphina, we haven't finalized anything yet. That's why I came back to talk it over with you. Tell me what you think. Whatever ideas you have, just let me know."
Seraphina thought about it, already picturing herself in a gorgeous wedding dress. She imagined an extravagant outdoor ceremony on a pristine lawn, flanked by her loved ones, witnessing the happiest moment of her life.
But fantasy was just fantasy. Deep down, she knew such a grand wedding wasn't realistic right now. She offered a sweet, understanding smile.
"Finn, as long as I get to be with you, anything is fine. Even if we don't have a ceremony or take photos, as long as we make it official on paper, that's enough for me."
Finnegan pulled her into his arms. "Seraphina, I know you're willing to compromise, but I'm not. I have to give you the magnificent wedding you deserve. Just give me a little more time, okay?"
Hearing this made her ecstatic. If he was this determined, the wedding was practically guaranteed. There was no way it wasn't happening now.
"Okay, I'll wait for you."
A sharp chill swept through Nora. Their ulterior motives were so blatant they might as well have slapped her in the face with them.
They were just terrified that once she returned to her family, she would reconcile with Benedict. The Fletchers couldn't bear to lose the massive influence of the Newman empire.
"I appreciate the gesture, Frederick, but this is a private family matter. Today is the memorial for my mother and brother. Outsiders have no place interfering."
Finnegan looked genuinely hurt. "Outsiders? How can we be outsiders? We're family!"
Nora took a cold step back. "Did you forget? Finnegan is no longer in this world. His registry has been canceled. I can walk away whenever I want, and I have absolutely no ties to the Fletcher family!"
Finnegan's gaze turned hostile. "How can you be so sure? I told you, Finn might still be alive! Just trust me one more time."
