Hearing this, Finnegan grabbed her throat, his fingers tightening like a vise.
Seraphina's laughter came to an abrupt halt; the sudden pain in her neck made her gasp, but the frantic look in her eyes didn't fade in the slightest.
"What did you say?" Finnegan’s voice was dangerously low, squeezed from the depths of his throat, each word blanketing the office in a suffocating tension.
Seraphina tilted her head back, letting him choke her, her eyes filled with a reckless, self-destructive madness as she rasped, "I said, Nora stopped loving you a long time ago. She’s going to marry someone else soon. Did you really think she'd just stand around waiting for you? Finnegan, you think way too highly of yourself."
Finnegan shoved her away violently. Seraphina stumbled and crashed into the edge of the desk, her forehead throbbing in pain. Yet, acting as if she felt nothing, she braced her hands against the surface and forced herself to stand.
She glared at him with a cold smirk. "You think I'm talking nonsense?!"
"You really don't know, do you, Finnegan? Nora doesn't love you anymore! She figured out your real identity ages ago. Did you honestly believe your proud little masquerade could fool her?"
Finnegan reeled back in shock, absolute disbelief written all over his face. "That's impossible. I hid it perfectly. There's no way Nora could know. You're lying to me, aren't you?"
Seraphina rubbed her throat, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "What's so impossible about it? Even if she didn't know who you really were, you've been dead for five years. You ceased to exist biologically for five whole years. Did you expect her to play the grieving widow forever? Finnegan, what makes you think she would wait for a dead man?"
Those words were like a dagger, slicing precisely into the most vulnerable part of Finnegan's heart.
It was true. He had faked his death for five years, taken on a new identity, and lived by Seraphina's side as his brother, Frederick. Meanwhile, Nora had sobbed over his supposed corpse until she passed out. She had given birth to Cassie alone, raised their child by herself, and weathered every storm on her own.
"As of right now, Seraphina, you are no longer my fiancée, nor do you hold a position at this company. HR will process your termination. Pack up all your things and leave immediately."
He stared her down and delivered his final, ruthless blow. "I never want to see you again."
Seraphina's face drained of color. She never expected him to be this ruthless. She thought she still had leverage, believing that after all the years she had spent by his side, he wouldn't drive her to an absolute dead end.
But she was dead wrong.
Desperation replacing her earlier arrogance, Seraphina lunged forward and grabbed his arm, her voice breaking into a sob. "Finnegan, you can't do this to me! Yes, I made a mistake, but who did I do it for? It was only because I loved you too much! I admit I targeted Nora because I was jealous. I could tell you still cared about her, and I was terrified of losing you. I was so scared! Finn, please give me one more chance. Nora is going to leave you, but I will never leave you."
