I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 391

A dark, twisted thought took root in Seraphina's mind, growing wildly out of control. If she had to suffer, there was no way she was letting them live happily ever after.

A venomous glint flashed in her eyes as she rushed out the door.

She knew Cassie was at school and rushed over before the final bell rang.

Seraphina parked her car a short distance away, rolled down the window, and discreetly kept a close watch on the school gates.

She lit a cigarette. She rarely ever smoked, so the harsh smoke made her cough violently, nearly bringing tears to her eyes.

She crushed the cigarette out aggressively, her fingers still trembling.

She had lost everything. Her job was gone, Finnegan had thrown her away, and she wasn't even allowed to see Cassie.

Why? She had spent years by Finnegan's side.

She had been there for Cassie from the time the girl could barely speak until now. Yet, in the end, she was the one getting kicked to the curb, while Nora got to walk away with everything and marry someone else?

Seraphina refused to accept it. It was too incredibly unfair.

If her life was ruined, she was going to make sure theirs was too.

When school let out that afternoon, the main gates opened right on time. Kids poured out in droves, their chaotic chatter echoing halfway down the street.

Seraphina stepped out of her car and stood near the entrance, spotting Cassie almost immediately.

Cassie had her hair tied in two little buns and was wearing a pink backpack. She stood near the gates, clearly looking for someone.

Soon, Martha hurried over and bent down to tie Cassie's shoelaces. As Cassie stood there looking around, her gaze swept past the crowd, and her eyes suddenly lit up.

Martha hesitated. But considering Seraphina had been a fixture in the Fletcher family for years and was incredibly close to Cassie, everyone saw her as part of the inner circle.

Although Mr. Fletcher had given orders not to let anyone else see the girl, Ms. Shaw wasn't exactly an outsider. After mulling it over, Martha decided not to push the issue and simply urged, "Please bring Cassie home early."

Seraphina nodded, and Martha turned and left.

Cassie held Seraphina's hand, looking up with bright, eager eyes. "Are we getting strawberry ice cream? The pink kind from last time? I've been craving it forever!"

Seraphina led Cassie toward the alley. "Sure, we'll get the pink one."

Cassie skipped happily beside her, chattering non-stop about what happened in class today. Seraphina offered agreeable hums, but her palms were sweating profusely from nerves.

She had never done anything like this before; naturally, crossing this line for the first time was terrifying.
